Toronto be proud.

I was driving through the 401 East bound in the collector's lane close to the 400 this morning around 11'sh am. and unexpectedly there was a big back up. Most of the flowing traffic was through the right lane. Switched over and 5 minutes later I noticed a little doggie running loose mostly through the left and middle lanes.

There were at least 10 men and women on the highway trying to catch the little doggie. All cars stopped or moving slowly trying to avoid hitting the doggie. I curled into the left, stopped my car, got off and tried to call him in (let's assume it's a he). He almost came to me but took off like lightning to the right and started running forward. All parked cars turned their engines back on and followed him.

We followed him and tried to box him in. Then I noticed 3 to 4 cars on the express lanes parked their cars on the curb, jumped over the rail and tried to help. We were all tried again but to no avail. He ran off again and we followed. None of the drivers behind us that we blocked seemed to care that they were being delayed for a little doggie. Kudos to you Torontonians.

He dashed off forward again and the chase began. There was a time that 6 cars including mine made a circle/square to box him in again. Thought we had him but he escaped us again. There he goes again running and surely scared on the 401 eastbound. He then moved on to the right lane and took off towards the right ramp exit. I couldn't follow him anymore because the middle lanes cars were blocking me to head off to the right exit.

I did notice a small red car with a young couple desperately trying to catch him through the 15 minutes ordeal. I would presume the owners of the dog or true love lovers. On I continued to my meeting appointment, called 911 and told them what is going on.

She said we are well aware of it and help is on the way. Ontario residents, stand up and be proud.

Glad to see there are many animal lovers in Toronto.

Remind myself to carry a dog biscuit in my car.

Talking to myself :-Cool/"

Stories like this warm my cold cynical heart. I hope he's safe.

Thanks for the post, Boing.

I wouldn't let the insurance companies find out, they'd raise everyone's rate for dangerous highway driving!

Nice to hear about a good story for a change.

LOL I doubt anyone was worried about their insurance rates.

Oh I hope he is safe. What a wonderful story. Sentry rescued a kitten years ago from a busy expressway median after someone threw him out of their car. I still have him and he is a such a wonderful pet (and I do mean the cat, not Sentry!)

That's a great story and i hope the little bastard got off the highway......that's the thing that kills me about animals, they don't know when you're trying to help them and 9 times out of 10, just get themselves into more trouble......

I remember driving down to atlanta on I-75 and there was a similar backup, it turned out a raccoon had made it's way across 7 lanes of traffic and was caught trying to jump the concrete median.....though with raccoons you have to be careful cuz they'll tear your arm off when cornered.....

There is a fine line between stopping to help an animal and creating a risking situation on the highway. Applause goes out to being able to get the traffic stopped safely and attempt the rescue. WTG Boing! :good:

Hope the little guy turned out OK. Just use best judgment when evaluating the situation to prevent putting your life and the lives of others at risk when trying to help.

Let's face it, we are used to small animals on the roads....

That was funny. I still cannot believe those drivers going full speed with an animal on the highway.

There were a few people already trying to safe him. I tried looking on line to see if he was safe but no luck.
