Awesome job Choke! :great:

1. Obesity is not a simplistic imbalance of energy in and energy out but a far more complex matter of how, biochemically, the body can store or utilize fat. Carbohydrate is the unique maconutrient that facilitates fat storage and prevents fat utilization.

2.Fat/Protein calories have jobs to do within the body-they contribute to the 'up to' 85% of energy requirement determined by metabolic rate. Carbohydrate doesn't; this needs to be burned as fuel or it will be stored as fat.

3.Insilin has been called the fattening hormone for good reason and only carb calories stimulate the release of insulin; fat/protein calories have no impact on insulin.

4.A calorie is not a calorie- if it were the second law of thermodynamics would be violated. Fat/protein calories have substantial metabolic advantage over carbohydrate calories.A low carb diet can thus simulate a low calorie diet, as if a 25% reduction in calorie intake had been made, but without the accompanying desire to eat more and do less.

5. Isocaloric studies, back as far as 1956, have shown low calorie diets to be far less effective than low carb diets.

Thank you very much for all the responses.

Maurice are you a doctor, you sure write like one.

Tboy, I don't believe the theory behind the show you watched one bit. I rapidly lose weight when I cut out the carbs. I don't hold back on the proteins but I almost totally eliminate carbs and sugars. The hardest part for me is the snacking. I DESPISE snacking on carrots and celery sticks. I know I can indulge in a little peanut butter but I worry about the sugar content. My weakness is cookies and breads and I cannot find a suitable replacement. I snacked on cranberries, raisins and almonds today which wasn't bad.

I think your trade helps you with your weight and you are probably blessed with a great metabolism. I had a close friend that was always over weight growing up. He went into the construction industry at the age of 28 working with cement and foundations. He's a friggen ripped twig now for the last 10 years. He's loving it because the ladies now love him because he's always tanned and ripped without working out.

Maurice Boscorelli are you saying that Tboy is wrong? I think he is but I want to hear it from you.

It's been to goody too shoe around here lately. This board needs an enema!:bs:

Nope not a doctor but have most likely done more research and reading on nutrition than any doctor that I know.

Most of them are stuck in the calories in equals calories out way of thinking. This for the majority of us doesn't hold true.

Remember the definition of a calorie is ''The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water from 14.5 degrees C to 15.5 degrees C, at standard atmospheric pressure''.

Then there the Calorie Formula ( also known as the calorie theory) that state '' One pond of fat contains 3500 calories. so to lose 1lb a week you need a deficit of 500 calories a day''

The problem with this is;

1.One pound of fat does not equal 3500 calories

2.The body is not a bunsen burner;

3.There is no evidence that a repeated deficit of 3500 calories will lead to a loss of one pound of fat. Equally there is no evidence that a repeated excess of 3500 calories will lead to a gain of one pound of fat.

What he is saying is common dogma in the medical community.

The latest research and studies have refuted that approach to weight loss and eating for over all health.

Actually I have lost substantial pounds using Atkins which was low carbs but high fat and calories. So yes from my perspective tboy is absolutely wrong. But who wanted to bother arguing over this. The problem is that this diet leads to other problems- like those associated with heart disease due to the high fat content. Plus there is always the issue of keeping it off.

hey, i am just passing on the info from the two programs that were on this week......if you have a beef, take it up with them!!!!

here's the link, go bitch at the doctors and scientists who were featured on the show....

Sorry bosco, i will take what a scientist who has studied the problem for over 40 yrs over you anyday......no offence.

A diet high in healthy fats and not trans fats has no correlation with coronary heart disease. This is a misnomer.

Ancel Keys in his famous 7 countries study tried to prove that there was a correlation and even manipulated his data to support it.

But before his death he admitted that he was wrong.

However the avoid fat hysteria had begun as a result of his flawed study.

Next the politicians jumped in with their food pyramids and plates. Which of course trumpeted the consumption of loads of carbs.

Decades later diabetes and coronary heart disease are at record highs. Go figure, lol.

I'm going to watch the HBO show and I'll get back to you.

I speak from experience: a few years ago my tummy got sick, after months and months and several doctors trying to figure out what was wrong with me I went on an Elimination diet. This was to see if any food in particular was making me sick.

Anyway long story short, I educated myself, dr's werent helping. I cut out EVERYTHING WHITE AND OR PROCESSED FOODS. I ate organic meats and chicken only. Fish, nuts, fruits and vegies.

NO MILK, NO SUGAR (only in the wine lol) NO PASTA, NO BREAD (gluten free only) NO POTATOES, NO RICE, NOTHING FROM A CAN OR A BOX.

I lost 80lbs. within 8-10 months. I was healthy & feeling good again.

But when I hit some serious stress levels I started eating carbs again. Needless to say a few pounds are back on. I just started a no-carb diet again cuz I don't like the way I feel.

MB is right about the heart-disease. Even though i gained back some weight when I had a heart attack last year. It was not from high fat, it was due to smoking.

Interesting thread. I know I eat too much pasta and bread. It's my Achilles heel but I'd be lost without my pasta and I can't stand the whole wheat shit.

It's not yours!

But by you taking possession of it, it will be harder to give up.

im with you, most of the whole grain stuff has the consistancy of sawdust and i get enough of that at work....my doc said i needed more fibre in my diet but i don't think she was referring to wood fibre heheheheh

as for giving up white breads and pasta etc....seriously, the simplest way to control one's weight is everything in moderation. I mean, a McD's hamburger isn't going to really do you much harm, if you have one once a month.....it's a problem when you have a big mac meal 3 times a day. Same as french fries.....once in a while isn't bad, but once every 4 hrs is.....for eg: the other day i had fries....first time in over 3 months......it's been 17 yrs since i had a hamburger......

Salt is another good example. My dad comes up here sometimes and we go to lunch. I put salt on what i'm eating sometimes and he slaps my hand "accch stop that"....i said to him, you're nuts. Without salt we'd die.....then comes the argument "we get enough salt in the foods...." i said, maybe you, eating enough per meal for 3 people, but i checked my usual eats and only 1 had salt in the ingredients so for me, i don't get enough salt.....seriously, people are hung up on salt is bad salt is bad.....well, only if you have too much of it.....

Like protein...good or bad? bad if that is all you eat........

Me? I don't get enough fruits....i get a shitload of veggies being vegetarian......but i am really REALLY deficient in protein....i think the rda is something like 30 g per day, i figured out i get maybe 7......

All this diet talk has me considering going on one. OK, I've thought about it, FORGET IT, it's not happening. Seriously though I'm not that bad of an eater and I eat all foods in moderation. I am not afraid to eat a piece of cheese cake but I wouldn't eat more than one or everyday. The same goes for drinking and women, nothing wrong with it in moderation. I wouldn't mind a different woman everyday may 2 but 3 would be overkill!

I watched part one and it mentions the best diets are lean meats, fish, vegetables, fruit and whole grains. The biggest issue food wise I can see from the documentaries portrayal is fast food i.e. high fat processed foods. Albeit I've only watched part 1 and when I have some time later this evening I will watch part
