Major tsunami damage reported in northern Japan after 8.9 quake

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive body of water filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward highways.

The epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from the capital, Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. But residents there felt the tremors.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. Waves of debris flowed like lava across farmland, pushing boats, houses and trailers toward highways.

In Tokyo, crowds gathered in the streets and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Scenes inside office buildings showed papers strewn all over the floor and people clinging onto seats and desks.

Such a large earthquake at such a shallow depth creates a lot of energy, said Shenza Chen of the U.S. Geological Survey.

It caused a power outage in about 4 million homes in Tokyo and surrounding areas.

A tsunami in the Pacific was moving closer to other shorelines in other countries, said CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera.

It triggered tsunami warnings for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

"Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter."

The quake was the latest in a series in the region this week.

Early Thursday, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck off the coast of Honshu.

A day earlier, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off of Honshu, the country's meteorological agency said.

The largest recorded quake took place in Chile on May 22, 1960, with a magnitude of 9.5, the USGS said.







 
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese police arrested a businessman on Wednesday for sending a 15-year-old boy to help clean up radioactive waste outside the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant.

The Aichi prefectural police said the boy, from Kitanagoya City, western Japan, was sent to Fukushima to cut contaminated leaves and scrape up dirt in the disaster zone last July.
Japan's labor law prohibits people under 18 from working in radioactive areas.

The boy told the Asahi newspaper that he was introduced to his former boss through a government-run employment agency and ordered to lie about his age.
He said his former employer eventually lowered his wages to just $30 a day and hit him when he did not do well at his job.

Workers cleaning up villages in Fukushima are supposed to receive a special hazard allowance equivalent to about $90 a day from the government in addition to their wages.

An earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 destroyed the Fukushima Daiichi plant, 220 km (130 miles) northeast of Tokyo, sparking triple nuclear meltdowns, forcing more than 160,000 residents to flee nearby towns and contaminating water, food and air.

Thousands of workers have been clearing waste from towns closest to the plant in the past four years.

A Reuters investigation showed how Japan's traditional subcontracting structure in the construction industry opened up lucrative clean-up contracts in Fukushima to multiple layers of small companies that regularly skim workers' pay.

Japanese tsunami debris B.C. pickup pitched by Gulf of Alaska Keeper

As we approach the fourth anniversary of the Japanese tsunami, U.S. group Gulf of Alaska Keeper wants to use helicopters and a huge barge to remove tonnes of material still littering B.C. and Alaska coastlines.

The group plans to float the barge around the north Pacific this summer, picking up huge loads of debris still stranded in coastal Alaska, with other pickup sites proposed for B.C.

"I know up in Haida Gwaii they have a tremendous amount of debris on the outer shoreline," said the group's president and director Chris Pallister. "It's hard to access and hard to get off, and our barge will have to go past that, and the outside of Vancouver Island is in the same position."

Pallister says his group in Alaska and others in B.C. have struggled to safely and economically haul away the huge amounts of debris with their small boats. "The cost was just driving us out of business, so we just started caching it and piling it up in the hopes we could get a more efficient removal project together... We have 1800 super sacks waiting to haul right now."

Pallister says the plan is to float the barge with the massive load of marine debris to a facility in Seattle that's licensed to handle waste from Canada.

Residents and local governments in coastal B.C. had raised concerns about a surge of debris filling up limited landfill space. Pallister says the barge is meant to alleviate that problem. "Everybody that I've been talking to... seems to be pretty positive about it and would like to take advantage of this."

Some money for the $900,000 project will come from a grant from the Japanese government. In 2012, Japan donated $1 million to B.C. and another $5 million to U.S. West Coast states to help with the cost of cleaning up the debris.

Japanese fisherman whose boat was swept away in 2011 tsunami in B.C. to reunite with lost vessel

KLEMTU, B.C. — A Japanese fisherman is to be reunited with his boat more than four years after a powerful tsunami hit his country and carried the craft to the shores of British Columbia.

Kou Sasaki arrived in Vancouver on Monday and later this week will be heading to the coastal village of Klemtu, where his vessel washed up in the spring of 2013.

Spirit Bear Lodge manager Tim McGrady said a hereditary chief’s son found the boat, which was in remarkable condition after its journey across the Pacific Ocean.

McGrady said he claimed the vessel but dreamed of one day learning who owned it. That mystery was solved with the help of a Japanese-speaking Canadian who stayed at the lodge last year with her husband, philanthropist and art collector Michael Audain.

McGrady said Yoshi Karasawa translated the boat’s name as “Two Pines” and eventually found Sasaki, whose wife and son died in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed 19,000 people.

“He was very excited to come and be reunited with his boat and meet the people here in Klemtu,” McGrady said. “I think it’s going to be quite a big deal for him.

“For thousands of years they’ve lived from the sea’s resources and been out on the sea on small boats, so I think there’s that connection that will be instantaneous.”

Sasaki is to be welcomed to Klemtu on Friday with a traditional First Nations blessing ceremony and songs by the Xai’Xais First Nation, McGrady said.

He said Karasawa and Audain sponsored Sasaki’s visit to Canada and will accompany him to Klemtu, a lush community in the heart of the so-called Great Bear rainforest, about 700 kilometres northwest of Vancouver.

The white, seven-metre fibreglass boat with a blue trim has a unique design, McGrady said.

“It’s self bailing so it can flood with water and the water just drains out of it,” he said, adding the vessel’s hull, bow and stern include compartments for fish and allow water to circulate through them.

“Everybody here loves it,” McGrady said. “It’s reminiscent of a boat called a panga that fishermen down in Mexico use.”

McGrady said the boat would be too expensive for Sasaki to transport to Japan.

“He’s bought a new boat and he’s quite happy to just come and see that his boat is being used and being looked after,” he said.

“We’re going to take him out and try and see some grizzly bears.”
 
Robots sent to clean up Fukushima after nuclear disaster, have died from radiation

It appears that not even robots can survive a nuclear disaster. Five years ago, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that hit the northeastern coast of Japan. It obliterated several prefectures, killing nearly 19,000 people and damaging four reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Following the 2011 disaster, five robots that were sent to Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have “died” due to the effects of leaked radiation.

There is still a massive amount of radiation at the Fukushima plant and removing the melted fuel rods, the source of the problem, is proving an incredibly difficult and dangerous challenge.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), owner of the power plant, had sent in numerous bots inside the power plant, including bots that were able to swim underwater. The robots were sent to locate some of the harder-to-reach rods. But as soon as the robots got close, the radiation destroyed their wiring.

It is unclear whether a more resistive technology can be developed. Further, the last robot to make use of muon rays (an X-ray-like tech) only returned “grainy” images before it was lost to the effects of radiation.

The untimely death of these bots leaves Tepco in a state of perplexity, as it struggles to deal with the disaster and the radiation leaking into the water.

According to ScienceAlert, the Tepco has dealt with only 10 percent of the mess created by the tsunami and subsequent meltdown.

Justin McCurry of the Guardian reports, “Of greatest concern, though, is reactor 1, where the fuel may have burned through the pressure vessel, fallen to the bottom of the containment vessel and into the concrete pedestal below – perhaps even outside it – according to a report by the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning. Reactors 2 and 3 are thought to have suffered partial meltdowns.”

The site manager, Akira Ono, said he is “deeply worried” that radioactive water, used to cool down the reactors and then stored in tanks, will leak into the sea again.

However, the good news is that the robots, built by Toshiba, were able to remove 1,535 spent fuel-rod assemblies from the reactor 4 building before they went kaput, but the radiation levels were lower there, making it easy to perform the job. But Reactor 3 has been a different story. The radiation levels are much higher and the sensitive electronics and wires inside the robots couldn’t handle it.

Unfortunately, a new robot cannot be sent inside to complete the job. Naohiro Masuda, head of decommissioning at Tepco, told Reuters that each robot was custom-built for each building and it took two years to get each one built and ready for action. There appear to be no understudies waiting in the wings. And in fact, a robot capable of withstanding the high levels of radiation environment doesn’t exist.

Tepco thinks a serious effort towards cleanup can begin in 2021 and it is currently estimated that it could take up to 40 years to decommission the plant.
