They had a good defense the last year or two, but just never had an elite QB to bring them over the top. Smith is an elite QB who has brought the 49ers to a SuperBowl. Throw in an experience tactician in Reid and you have the recipe for a good team. Of course the real test will come when they have to play Denver twice in the next month.
