So much for a glass of wine a day for your health's sake — all alcohol consumption is bad for you, according to a damning report.
The global study, which claims to be the most comprehensive of its kind, pours cold water on previous reports that espouse the protective effects of alcohol under some conditions.

While researchers acknowledged that moderate drinking can protect against heart disease and diabetes, they said that the risks of cancer and other illnesses outweigh those benefits and have called for a change in medical guidance.

"The widely held view of the health benefits of alcohol needs revising," said the .
The majority of national guidelines suggest that one or two glasses of wine or beer per day are safe for an adult's health. However, the report's authors said, "Our results show that the safest level of drinking is none."

The study, which was carried out by researchers at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, looked at levels of alcohol use and its health effects on those aged between 15 and 95 in 195 countries between 1990 and 2016.
It found that alcohol led to 2.8 million deaths in 2016 and was the leading risk factor for premature mortality and disability among those aged 15 to 49, accounting for 10 percent of all deaths.

The greatest proportion of alcohol-related deaths among young people were tuberculosis, road injuries and self-harm, the report found. Meanwhile, for those aged over-50, the biggest killer was cancer, particularly among women.

Current drinking habits pose "dire ramifications for future population health," the reports authors said, urging people to rethink their approach to drinking alcohol.

The study claims to go beyond prior research because of the range of factors considered, including insights from 592 studies and 28 million people worldwide.
It forms part of a wider Global Burden of Diseases study, a research project based at the University of Washington that compiles data on the causes of illness and death in the world.

Health impacts of drinking: No level of alcohol safe, Lancet study

I would like to see a direct link to any disease caused by having a glass or two of wine every day.

Otherwise, just another,... "study shows,..." bull shit, by "researchers" who obviously can't find real employment.

Get a buzz and keep on doing what you are doing. Almost everything kills you anyway.

That's a pretty big study released in a very respected journal.

So it can't be taken lightly.

Having said that however I wouldn't expect much of a change in peoples habits going forward.

Myself because of the genesis of a problem I haven't had a drink in over 30 years now. So it won't affect me.

Publish,... or die

Publish,... or die

I'd like to see what other potentially negative life style tendencies people in the surveys had.

Those who are "drinkers" tend to also not be active, don't eat right, and are smokers.

There is a big difference between a "drinker", and some one who has a glass of wine every day.

Does anybody notice how "studies" are always negative, studies with expected positive outcomes, just never going happen in the 1st place, doesn't make for good headlines.

I'm the 1st one to agree that alcohol abuse is bad for people, on many levels, but to simply state that "no amount of alcohol is safe", is just clic bait.

Sorry, but I don't put much faith in "studies" that need to negative, to keep "researchers" employed.

Much like the 17,000 "climatologists" that exist, just what the hell does the world need 17,000 of them for, unless they can come up with continual "the sky is falling" reports, they are out of a job.

"Climatologists" and "researchers" are just as unemployable as ex teachers.

The researchers have taken into account other lifestyle issues as well. They control for diet, weight, smoking, exercise, and many other variables.
Personally I think the title is sensationalist. Small amounts of alcohol do very little harm, but medical researchers often think too much in black and white (all or nothing).

As for employment, they'd have a job no matter what the results were.
Its publish of perish, but you can publish results that show alcohol doesn't harm you (as has occurred with heart and stroke).
Same with climate change or whatever.
There's lot of things to study.

Finding and defining health risks or climate problems will get published either way if they find a problem or not.
Research is not a highly paid job and they are not doing it for the money (for the amount of education -- 12 years university -- and intelligence -- average over 140 IQ -- its probably the worst paid job).

In addition, they'd actually be able to make more money (from industry, beer or oil respectively) if they are prepared to lie.

As suspected the media are exaggerating things... and if I'm reading this chart from the paper the authors are as well. It suggests no added risk on 1 drink, and very little from 2.

The main upshot of this paper however is that alcohol causes cancer, so use in moderation.

Remember that study claiming no amount of alcohol is safe? Here’s why you shouldn’t worry.

It’s sobering stuff, but before you start pursuing Prohibition II, here are some reasons why that Lancet story may not be the final word on happy hour

That article goes to prove what I've been saying about "studies" created simply to employ, with accuracy, being the second requirement.

The "study" also didn't appear to take into account heredity, when stating that "alcohol causes cancer", and that statement in itself, reduces it to garbage.

Drinking a glass of wine at weekends for small portions can be very good for emotional state. Don't forget that drinking can become a huge problem if you start to drink every day. Today, especially in the global COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the number of alcohol-addicted people has risen by 20% for half of the year. Please always keep in mind that alcohol killed more people than wars. If you feel uncomfortable without drinking something from the start of the day, you need professional help and address proper rehab services like Abbeycare.
