American and Australian researchers say they've found a way to reverse the aging process for mice and are now testing whether it works for humans.
The scientists from Harvard University and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) said they've discovered a way to turn youthful genes on, and older genes off, using proteins and molecules.
The scientists prematurely aged a mouse from six months to two years, then reversed the aging process to "recreate youth," lead researcher David Sinclair said in a talk he gave at UNSW on Monday.
"We've discovered genes that control how the body fights against aging and these genes, if you turn them on just the right way, they can have very powerful effects, even reversing aging — at least in mice so far," Sinclair told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Sinclair said the researchers have moved from mice into "early human studies" and they hope to know in the next few years if reversing the aging process in people will be possible.
