So true, was thinking the same thing myself.

Everybody thinks the rules don't apply to them. The accident will never happen to them. Until it's too late and you just ran over and killed a nice family of five out for a walk after dinner.

It's called 'personal fable' and usually applies to youth, but adults suffer from it too.

I get the annoyance and danger of people paying more attention to their phones than to what's going on around them. But that really shouldn't require yet another law. You just can't outlaw stupidity and laws like this are a waste IMO. Laws should apply when someone has done something wrong. If you are reading your phone and Jwalk.....that deserves a fine. But if you follow all the laws of pedestrian travel, disrupt no one, harm no one, etc. Why should you be fined.

This is like banning every pitbull because some have attacked, harmed and even killed people.
This is like outlawing prostitution because some prostitutes are actually victims of trafficking.
This is like outlawing drugs because some users overdose.

You make a good point, rules to protect people from themselves never seem to work anyway.
And really the main problem with texting and walking is that drivers have to pay attention and slow down...
its the drivers who are the idiots for speeding on busy streets in the first place...
lets get bad drivers off the road first... and let the idiots who walk into walls discover for themselves that its a stupid idea.

Years ago I was driving with my boyfriend down a busy in town, 2 lane each way road. I couldn't help but notice that the truck in the lane beside me was slowly coming towards me. As I tried to avoid a collision by getting over as far as I could without hitting the curb I also couldn't help but notice that where there had been two heads before there was now only one. Alas, I couldn't avoid the sideswipe by him and his SO. Shucks, if you can't handle doing something else while driving just don't.
