PSA regarding wearing safety glasses while using power tools....

Ok guys and girls, many of you know I had cataract surgery done on both eyes a couple of months ago and while I used to frequently wear safety glasses, I bought extra pairs to insure I always had a pair with me to wear.

Now this is in no way meant to garner pity from anyone but just this afternoon while using a grinder to cut through 1/4" steel plate at work, the blade shattered and it flung the grinder....you guessed it, right at my face. So it knocked me on my ass and I grabbed my face...saw the blood pouring through my fingers, down my nose to drip into a puddle on the ground.

To top it off, the owner of the company I worked for just drove up not two seconds earlier....I had them grab a towel I keep in my truck, put it to my face, took off my SAFETY GLASSES piled everything in my hat, locked up my truck and he drove me to the hospital.

They put me right in.....guess what? no stitches, just a little bit of glue over my eye......

So, here's the important part: I go back to the site and look at my safety glasses. Sure enough, right smack dab in the middle of one lens is a big gouge, it travelled across the lens, up to the corner right where the cut was. If I hadn't been wearing my SAFETY GLASSES I'd most likely have lost an eye......Seriously, when I put the glasses back on the gouge in the lens was centered perfectly over my left eye........

So guys, WEAR THE FUCKING GLASSES DAMMIT!!!!! Doesn't matter whether you're using a grinder, a drill, a saw, whatever, they aren't that expensive so pick up two or three pairs and when you're working with power tools, put those fuckers ON.....

For all you guys that don't think they look cool, canadian tire sells harley davidson style safety glasses now so there's no reason. Get a tinted pair for use outdoors and a clear pair to use inside.....Lee Valley even sells some in bi-focal so if you have trouble reading fine print, they work great.

I always remember that commercial when I was a kid where a construction worker not wearing his glasses is hammering away.

And of course a piece of the spike he is hammering on breaks off and goes directly in his eye.

After seeing that I always wore safety glasses when the occasion called for it.

It just isn't worth not wearing them really and T's story just drives that point home.

thanks all, and yeah bosco, I related that commercial to the owner when he picked me up from the hospital......

I actually suggested we put my safety glasses on a plaque inside the employee's entrance with a sign saying "where's YOUR safety glasses"?

Yup, steel toed boots but no hardhat unless there are people working overhead.....but I always wear a baseball hat, provides a little padding when you're crawling around the framing, in and out of scaffolding etc.....if I didn't have that I'd have a hell of a lot more scars on my noodle.

I remember the doc saying that it might scar, I said "ach, no worries, it's just one more....look at all the others...." and he checked out my eyebrows, oh, there's one, there's another, oh look at those two..... I said "yeah, I was a bit of a scrapper hehehe".......

Anyhow, please remember to pick up a pair or two and keep em handy........

I just finished watching Bill Burr's comedy special on netflix lol.......fuck me, every time he said something that shocked me or made me laugh, my eyebrow went up YEOUCH...fuck lol YEOUCH fuuuuck.....gotta stop doing that lol......

Hey Patch, oops One Eye, err, I mean tboy, good to hear that you are okay. Always wear protective equipment whatever the job and regardless if it's work or at home.

Good video HOF.....I've seen a few of those but in this case, it really was an accident...of course, there could have been something wrong with the grinding disc which caused it to shatter. I was using it correctly with all guards in place. Had on the eye wear, hearing protection, hat, gloves etc.

Funny enough, I've been thinking about getting that disc today when I go in. Maybe contacting a lawyer. It really shouldn't have broken like it did.......but really, I wasn't seriously hurt, aren't missing any work, so what are my damages? A tim horton's coffee and a muffin? lol......

dude, you are lucky, people have been killed by those....a few years ago there was a rash of them flying off trucks and a few were killed.....then the opp stepped up truck inspections and they've come down considerably......
