I remember years ago ass-wipes would string wire across some snowmobile trails.

I have personally encountered it and I also have seen the results of a head in a helmet detached from the rider!

This is a criminal act and the offender should be charged with attempted murder or murder

If you want to stop people from trespassing on the trails on your land put a log across it not a chain.

And that log should be visible from a good enough distance to allow a rider time to stop.

I agree with your comment on riders trespassing on private property!
The incident that I was referring to was a marked trail and was public property!
Riders need to respect the trails they ride mountain bikes, ATV's, snowmobiles, dog walkers or cross country skiers.
But the bottom line is a jerk that strings wire with the intent of murder should be tried for the crime.

Problem, with the log is people will build a path around it.

While I think the chain should be painter florescent orange.
I find that people have a right to keep trespassers off their property in order to protect and preserve the land.

I know this is as unpopular as my willingness to terminate with extreme prejudiced anyone who illegally enters my home.

I once hit a chain on my bicycle at full speed. It was just high enough to take the skin off my knuckles before hitting me solid in the chest. Dead Stop. The bike kept going, I landed on my ass.
as a kid, I hit a clothes-line on my dads snowmobile. Snow was deep, so the line was about windshield hieght. Hit my neck and knocked me off, but no damage. Someone I was with had wirecutters. They needed a new line in the spring.
yes, both cases I was totally trespassing, shouldn't have been on someone's property.

There was a time a few years back that snowmobilers were getting decapitated at a regular rate because of property owners stringing wiring across their property to discourage trespassers. The practice is stupid and although the owner is trying to keep unwanted people off his/her property, there are better ways.

A friend of mine owns a bike shop and also runs a cycle group. He's told me about the horror stories like this. If the property line isn't clearly marked, the rider has no idea he/she is trespassing if they're unfamiliar with the trail. Personally, if my property is that big, I wouldn't care much and let people enjoy the path as long as it's not destructive, I'm more concerned with neighborhood kids on my lawn.

Would you be ok with the possibility of being sued by a rider who gets injured on your property?

I don't agree with putting a chain across the path, but I also don't agree with people not respecting private property.

That's valid but I also believe we live in Canada and not the USA where lawsuits are dropped on people like rain drops.
