Tara Houlihan, 17, was walking home from a party at 4 a.m. after a night of drinking, when she apparently lay down in the middle of the road to nap outside a pub in Wicklow, Ireland. It is not known if the intoxicated teen realized she was lying in an active roadway. A car driven by a man aged in his 40s accidentally ran over the youngster as she dozed on the road.
The car allegedly drove over the teenager's head. Tragically, the weight of the vehicle broke the neck of the 17-year-old. The head and face of the young blonde were crushed beneath the wheels. It is believed that the youth also suffered brain damage from the incident.
The injured adolescent was taken to the hospital, and has been on life support for more than two weeks. Hopes are fading for the survival of the teenager. Even if Tara Houlihan survives, she could be left with permanent facial injuries.
The accident was initially thought to be a hit-and-run, as the driver did not stop after running over the teen. However, the man later voluntarily presented himself to the police after hearing media reports about the incident.
The driver of the car, whose name is being kept private, told police he did not realize that he had driven over the teenager as she lay on the roadway, and he is 'devastated' by the accident. Senior sources say they find 'credible' his account. Police are deciding whether to bring criminal charges against the man
