Acclaimed director Jonathan Demme died this morning at 73 in New York of esophageal cancer.

He quietly made some great early movies like "Something Wild" (personal favorite) and "Caged Heat" with a surprising mix of vivid music video work for New Order, Robyn Hitchcock, and Talking Heads.

As he grew, the movies he directed got bigger -- "Philadelphia, The Manchurian Candidate, and of course, "Silence of the Lambs" which won 6 Academy Awards, including Best Director.

He was already ousted from Fox News last year due to a sex scandal, but it looks like ousting him probably wasn't even necessary, he would've died anyways.

Pascal Weirlein in the Sauber gave us a scare at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this morning. His car was sideways against the side of the guardrail, head first, at the entrance to the tunnel, after touching wheels with Jensen Button, filling in for Fernando Alonso, who's in the Indy 500 today. Fortunately for Pascal, both cars were doing less than 60 MPH at the time of the collision, and probably less than 5 MPH by the time his head hit was near the wall. I don't think an F1 driver has died at Monaco since '67. If Weirlein had been seriously injured, they wouldn't have shown the onboard shot at all, at least not on North American television. Scary stuff.
 
We did an Allman Brothers medley last night in memorial. Very sad loss to the music community.

Hmm, I'm watching the Monaco GP right now, that incident hasn't happened yet, but I'm only on lap 49 so far.
