Rob Ford's Escalade impounded in Ontario cottage country: report

Toronto mayor Rob Ford's black Cadillac Escalade has been impounded and a 36-year-old woman charged with impaired driving, according to media reports.

LeeAnne McRobb was pulled over while driving the SUV in Ontario's Muskoka lakes region.

The mayor was not in the vehicle at the time, and police have released scant details so far.

Last week, of Bracebridge, Ont., where he snapped photos with several residents. He is currently enrolled in a rehab program.

Rob Ford’s rehab centre issued an appeal for privacy Friday as eTalk published the first photo of the civic leader inside the facility.

The mayor also popped up posing for photos with people in Midland. CTV entertainment show eTalk revealed a photo Friday of Ford walking the grounds at GreeneStone Muskoka — the rehab centre where he has been since taking a leave for his admitted alcohol problem.

The venerable politician was talking about the impending return of the chief magistrate, Rob Ford, an event that has drawn decidedly more colourful analogies from other corners.
“Circus” is a popular one. “Cannonball” is another. “Rob Ford is the oxygen in the fire and if he’s not around there isn’t the excitement that gets a lot of media attention,” said John Filion, a councillor for the north-end ward of Willowdale.

Tory ahead in mayoral race: Poll

John Tory is the frontrunner in Toronto’s mayoral race and Mayor Rob Ford is a distant third, according to a new poll.

A Nanos Research poll — commissioned by the Ontario Convenience Stores Association — found if an election were held today, Tory would win with the support of 39.1% of decided voters. Former NDP MP Olivia Chow would place second with 32.7%, followed by Ford at 21.7%.

The poll also found none of the other candidates in the race could crack 5%: Karen Stintz, 4%; Sarah Thomson, 2%; and David Soknacki, 1%.
“(Tory has) got the upper hand right now,” Nanos Research chairman Nik Nanos said Monday.
“The key takeaway is Ford is behind. Ford is clearly in third place, there is not a lot of room for growth.”

The poll — conducted from last Wednesday to Saturday — comes just as Ford returned from rehab and jumped back on the campaign trail.
While Nanos stressed the poll is a “snapshot” with a long way to go to election day, he admitted it looks like a “two-horse race” at this point.
“If this continues to be the trend, then I think Rob Ford is potentially making the transition from a political phenomenon to more a celebrity phenomenon,” he said.

With undecided voters factored in, Tory still leads with 34.2% of those polled while Chow has 27.8%, Ford had 19.1% and 13% were undecided.
The poll found the incumbent mayor did best with younger Toronto residents, under 30, y but didn’t do well with female voters. Chow did best among female voters while Tory did well with male voters.
“(Ford is) in a pretty tight spot right now,” Nanos said.

Around 37% of those polled who would vote for Ford as their first choice indicated Tory was their second choice for mayor.
Nanos said that’s a further sign that “if Rob Ford falters” any further it seems clear that “John Tory is going to be the main beneficiary.”
He said Ford needs to push out a solid platform.

“He’s got to be more competitive,” Nanos said.
As for the most important issue facing the city, around 34.8% of those polled said transit was the top issue while 17.1% said high property taxes, 16.4% said jobs and 14.1% said traffic.

Voters pick a new mayor and city council on Oct. 27.
The poll of 600 Toronto residents is accurate within 4%, 19 times out of 20.

You do have to feel sorry for the Eglinton business people if this does go through.

TORONTO - Mayor Rob Ford is promising to hit the brakes on Eglinton Connects.

At a presser on the street Tuesday, Ford ignored protesters urging him to resign as he delivered a statement promising to fight the Eglinton Connects plan. While Ford kicked up a stink over the plan council has already approved in principle, rival John Tory blamed him for allowing it to happen on his watch and accused the incumbent of being “out of gas.”

Earlier this year, council approved the $150-million plan aimed at beautifying the major street once the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project is complete, adding bike lanes and helping facilitate intensification of the corridor.

This week council will debate the official plan amendments needed to start to implement Eglinton Connects.
“Council is going to draw it up and hopefully not approve it,” Ford said on Eglinton Ave. W. near Allen Rd. “A lot of the councillors weren’t even aware of it yesterday.”

Ford claimed the project will reduce lanes of traffic while city planner Jennifer Keesmaat stressed Monday that even after the changes, Eglinton will have two lanes of traffic in each direction.

“The taxpayers don’t want to spend $150 million and they do not want to reduce lanes from five lanes to two,” Ford said.
Mayoral rival John Tory issued a statement Tuesday calling Eglinton Connects a “non-starter” for him.
“I have said all along that any proposal that will add to road congestion by reducing lanes of traffic is a non-starter in my books,” Tory stated. “Eglinton Connects will do exactly that and will increase traffic by ten per cent on adjacent residential streets.

“Furthermore, this proposal has no firm cost attached to it and, what’s more, there is no plan to pay for it.”
Tory argued the plan could lead to “costs spiralling out of control, missed deadlines and traffic chaos.”

“This is exactly the sort of thing that was supposed to stop under Rob Ford’s watch. But we have mayor who is out of gas and can’t lead,” Tory said.
“Meanwhile, the NDP candidate for mayor, Olivia Chow, has no clear priorities when it comes to battling congestion and no plan to improve transit.

“Toronto needs a mayor who can bring real relief to our roads and our overcrowded transit lines - and I am that leader.”
