In anticipation of my impending trip to the Magic Kingdom, I decided to brush up on my Disney knowledge. Ok, it wasn't really my call. I would have much preferred the Avengers. But whatever.... I'm not about to say "no" to Charlize Theron naked or Kristen Stewart in tights.

I missed the first 5 minutes because I was getting my hot dog and popcorn. Fortunately, I still remembered the basic storyline from Sunday evening re-runs on CBC in my childhood.

What I liked:

- The casting was great. Theron, Stewart and Chris Hemsworth are perfect for their parts. Stewart brings some of the angst that she had in abundance from the Twilight Saga. My only gripe is that her conversion from a hapless, unsure victim to courageous battle-thirsty leader was hardly convincingly. Bill Pullman's speech as President in Independence Day was far more inspiring.

- The dwarves were...totally kickass! Funny as hell.

- The CGI was pretty well seamless. The special effects were convincing. In some parts, (the elf sanctuary) it was totally Avatar-esque.

- Charlize Theron stripping naked to slip into a milk bath. 'nuff said.

What I didn't:

- The first hour of the movie dragged. I found myself looking at my watch. Not a good sign. The second hour flew by. Much more exciting.

- Not a fan of dark, Tim Burton-style cinematography. Not sure if that was the director's style or a function of the setting (dreary old England). But, meh.

- Noticeable inconsistencies. If I notice stuff, it's bad. And I noticed stuff. Things like when Snow White was escaping on her white stallion. She rode bareback in all scenes except for a quick clip where you can see a beige blanket on the horse. Or her hair and make-up and dirt smeared on her face. It was so obvious.

Speaking of which, how the hell did Snow White find fresh lipstick in the middle of a swamp?

Overall, I enjoyed myself. I wouldn't see it again, but rumour has it that a sequel is in the works. I'd see that.
