Yesterday I woke up to find Ruth Ann my furry friend and companion of seventeen years had passed away in her sleep. Almost three years to the day and in the same spot that I had found The Great Cat Mom (Mrs. Beached) had let go her tenuous grasp on life.
I called in sick and spent the day teary eyed, sad and alone in the world. Did not feel like sharing and getting "it was only a cat".
Today called in again. No one wants to or should see a grown man crying. Just trying to stay away from the liquor cabinet and beer fridge.
My question is: Is it normal to feel this shattered when a pet dies? Am I losing it?

On a lighter note: Yoga Pants!!!

Pets are our friends and yes we do love them just as they love us.

Of course when my daughter brought home 2 carnival goldfish I named them Flushy and Floatie.........:biggrin2:

My dearest Beached, you lost a friend, cry, mourn, and cherish the memories.17 yrs is a long time and deserving of feeling such emotions. Fuck those who say it was just a....... what matters is, what that dear pet was to you. Be thankful you had her for so long and that she passed peacefully. No one should ever feel ashamed at expressing their emotions. I went through this in May and still cry. I'm thinking of you ...hugs.

Omygosh :sorry2: I'm so sorry Beached. I would fall apart if I had to part with my little floof and I've only had her for a couple years. I couldn't even imagine the pain you must be in. Gentle hugs

As much as I bitch and moan about my pets, I couldn't imagine not having them beside me and feeling what I feel and knowing when to come comfort me. I'm sorry for your loss.

I get more attached to my pets than I do to my SOs...and they cost less and love me more.

It is normal, Bleached. I've had my share of broken hearts since I was a young boy. We always had a dog either at my parent's place or ours. The pain hurts but do suggest to get another furry one asap.

Best of luck.

I'm sorry for your loss Beached. Been there, done that, and probably will again in the future.

So sorry to hear about your loss. You need to take care of you, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
The liquor won't help, but can I suggest cuddling with some speacial ladies will definitely make you feel better. 6 weeks ago I lost my big brother, went on a bit of a binge to see all my favorite SP's. It got me through a rough time when I have no one. Good thearapy :)
We lost one of my daughters cats a while ago, we got a little urn with her ashes and had a little molded paw print made with Ninja's name on it to remember her by.

hope you feel better soon.

^ very sorry TfLZ1 to hear about you losing your brother, my condolences.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I always wondered why us human beings can live up to 100 but furry ones maybe 18 years tops. Life is cruel.

Beach....sorry for your loss. It is ok to grieve.

This was like 20 years ago.

Plus why do that to fish.

On a serious note Beached...I know how hard it is to lose a pet.

Not much more to add, all have wise words.

Been there also. The pain will go away but the beautiful memories will remain.

Thank you all for your kind words and advice. After a long ride on my bicycle and an even longer nap I am doing much better. Also no booze.
Downside is I am wide awake at 1AM.
@TFZL1 I believe I offered you the same advice when your brother passed. You were already all over it though :). Hope all is good with you.
I am going to miss the greetings when I come in the door and having someone to talk to. I am sure my vet friend will want to hook me up with someone in need of home. Not just yet though.
So long Ruthless Animal happy travels.

Cats and Dogs are family members....it's perfectly normal to feel a heavy loss.

Does this help?

You are breaking the man's heart.
