Spiders EEK!

I had an early childhood encounter with what I thought was a caterpillar crawling up from the bathtub. It was a millipede. Slooooow crawler.
I've never knowingly come across a centipede. That would most likely have me running out of the house cuz I know they're fast.

The spiders are coming up through the pipes, not from windows/doors.

You could pick up some of the expandable foam to fill those gaps between the pipes and the floor Amy. They even have some that has insect repellent in them. The foam can get messy and you will only need a small amount to seal up those gaps.

Amy most spiders are harmless at least in Canada. I've never been bothered by creepy crawlies but I see a mouse and I'm jumping on the first thing I see.

I'm with Amy. Have had acrachnophobia since I was little. I remember hearing a story about my grandma freaking out over a huge spider when my mom had just brought me home from the hospital and my mother hated spiders just as much, so maybe it's a genetic phobia?

On the other hand - snakes, rodents and reptiles don't bother me at all, but I detest creepy crawlies like centipedes, silverfish, etc.

I used to have to call neighbours and relatives to kill spiders when I was younger, but I was a single mom for a lot of years, so I had to step up and deal with them. For some reason, it bothers me less if I catch and release them outside far away from the house, than if I try to kill them. I have developed a technique whereby I don't have to actually touch them in order to trap them. It freaks me out when they jump too. Yuck!

Ms. Sarah, any chance you would describe your technique?

ok, but don't laugh, I've put a lot of thought into this.

1. Wear thick soled shoes just in case you do have to stomp on it.

2. Wear long pants to protect your legs if it jumps.

3. Wear rubber gloves so there's no chance of touching it with your bare hands.

4. Use a plastic container that's about 6" in diameter to trap the spider. Margarine containers work well because they're not transparent so you can't see what the spider is doing once it's covered up.

5. Slide a thick piece of cardboard under the edge of the dish until the whole dish is on top of the cardboard. You can use the back of a notepad or cut the side out of a cereal box.

6. Open a door or window so you can keep both hands on the dish.

7. Slide one gloved hand underneath the cardboard while holding the dish firmly on the cardboard with the other hand.

8. Release the spider far, far away from your house by setting the cardboard carefully on the ground, lift the dish and run!!

If it's a small spider, I use the vacuum cleaner to suck them up, then stuff a kleenex in the end of the tube so it can't escape, and wait for a few weeks before emptying the vacuum to make sure it's dead.

Hope that helps! :smiling:

That's fabulous! Love it! Thank you :)
my only problem is going to be pants which is usually what gets me.
I used to keep an ex bf's shoes around just so I could stomp bugs with if needed but that eventually grossed me out too.
I can't believe I didn't think of the cereal boxes. I've used them before with releasing mice when I lived in a basement apt. Shudder shudder shudder.

Anyone else have this mental image of Amy in a HASMAT suit jumping up and down like a Flamenco dancer in order to kill spiders? :biggrin2:

They don't make HASMAT suits in midget size, Fang, pshaw!

Hahahahaha priceless! Certainly seems like something I would do if I had someone to write the note to.
