Student in critical condition after school explosion

The students were working close to an empty 55-gallon drum that contained oil residue. There was a vapour around the drum which ignited, causing the loud explosion.....SOMEONE IS IN BIG TROUBLE for leaving it there.

This kind of reminds me of something that happened when I worked for a large corporation. The artists in the graphics dept used to use glass juice bottles to clean their brushes etc and they had a large drum of solvent they used to buy it in bulk.

Well, one time a non-artist friend was visiting her artist friend and the artist had just finished cleaning her brush of orange paint. The visitor reached down and said "can I have a sip of your orange juice" and took a big swig.....from then on, they had to buy special brush cleaning containers.

We used to use old oil drums in shop all the time. For garbage containers, all sorts of things and we never cleaned them.

Guess they'll ban using drums for any purpose other than which it was intended.....

I just heard on the news that the student died as a result of his injuries.

They also stated on the news that he was cutting into the drum......not sure what with but if it was a torch or a grinder with a cutting blade, that's the cause of the explosion. Bet the teacher will be under the gun for not supervising......

BTW: folks, just so you know, just about anything in a powder or vapour form is combustible. Even flour, saw dust, aluminum, wood shavings, talcum powder etc.
