The story of two Brampton teenagers who conspired to murder their alcoholic mother has been greenlit for an Indie film.
Dubbed The Class Project, it follows “two sisters who, tired of their mother’s alcoholism and her abusive boyfriends, take matters into their own hands and plot to kill her,” according to a write-up in Variety magazine.
The film stars Abigail Breslin, 15, best known for her portrayal of a child beauty pageant contestant in Little Miss Sunshine.
The movie is based on a book of the same name written by Toronto Star crime reporter Bob Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell has called the murder the most “fascinating, bizarre and captivating” he ever covered.
In January, 2003, two sisters – then 15 and 16 – slipped their 44-year-old mother a cocktail of alcohol and prescription drugs, led her to the bathroom and held her head underwater for four minutes until she was dead. The crime had been “months” in the making, prosecutors would later learn. The death was initially ruled accidental, but after one year police were tipped off by a friend of the girls and charged them with first degree murder.
Since the girls were youths at the time of the offense, their names have never been released to the public.
At trial, the girls’ defense attoneys argued that they had taken the “extreme” measures in response to a troubled home life caused by the mother’s severe alcoholism. The prosecution, meanwhile, attempted to paint the mother as a caring woman struggling to cope with a pair of rebellious teens.
The two girls were ultimately sentenced to six years in jail. Judge Bruce Duncan said the girls’ chances for rehabilitation was high, but acknowledged the pair could wield their “superior intelligence” to manipulate others. The girls were also described as “materially demanding” and, until they were captured, “ambiguous” about the murder.
The pair were released in 2009 after serving three years. Now 24 and 23, at least one is now a student at the University of Waterloo.
