Sure she doesn't want to discourage others from doing the right thing and you still throw in in jail for 30 days and $300. I think she has discouraged others, they should have just called it even and let him go, it was only theft and he hadn't hurt anyone.

from what I read however he also stole a car and was charged with that but it didn't say whether that time and fine was for the theft of the phone or including the car.

I read some of the posts from others on that site and as usual, like some here, they miss the big picture....it isn't so much that he was rewarded for being a thief, he was rewarded for doing the right thing, even though he committed a crime.

I bet things of this sort have happened before, we just didn't hear about them. I know in some movies, there's a crook or ?? goes into a house to rob it, and finds someone chained in the cellar, or evidence of a murder etc and then goes to the police. A similar legal quandry would be if someone runs a red light and speeds whilst taking their wife, who is in labour, to the hospital. Sure, it was an emergency, but they still broke laws......most of the time, least from what I hear, they are let off because of the situation (wife in labour).

I even seem to recall something on CSI about a theif, stole a car, then found evidence of a murder in the trunk. They called the cops, told them where the car was so they could examine it. Now I know that's just tv but supposedly they take a lot of their stories from real life crimes.......

BTW: I like the one poster on that site who said "victims of theft feel violated" lol....I've had my car broken into tons of times and I never felt violated, pissed off yes, but not violated.......lol....some people.....

The man help catch a paedophile, who cares about a couple of cell phones and a wallet. He should have been let off with a warning. I agree with the Guid on this one!
