Things be so quiet you can hear the silence

sitting in the sand dunes area of death valley... the silence was deafening. It was so silent my brain was making up sounds -- white noise -- that got really loud... weird...
this was interupted by the scampering of a some kind of critter over the dunes a couple hundred feet away. Occassionally this noisy silence was shattered by a military jet passing over, but then the white noise in my ears would return.
