Reading the paper and checking news on line has me shaking my head with the useless information that the editor finds its good enough to print or put it on site. But maybe I am wrong and so do find it worthwhile and informative. And then to think us taxpayers fund so many useless studies.

So post what you think is useless information and let's find out who thinks otherwise.

This one comes from our own Toronto Sun.

Dinosaurs blown away by own farts, say researchers

They didn't see the warm front coming - but they sure would have heard it.
Dinosaurs changed their environment, thanks in part to their own powerful farts, new research suggests.

U.K. scientists have calculated the amount of flatulence large plant-eating dinosaurs would have produced at the dawn of our world, and say the combined ill wind would have been enough to warm the Earth. But they fall short of saying the back-fires may have led to their extinction.

Publishing their findings in the journal Current Biology, authors of the joint study -- from Liverpool John Moore's University, the University of London and the University of Glasgow -- centred their calculations on how much methane giant lumbering sauropods would have produced.

Sauropods are among the largest of the dinosaurs, known for their large bodies, long necks and small heads.
By comparing the dino-fart calculations to the amount released by modern cows, the researchers estimate all dinosaurs would have let rip a combined 520 million tonnes of gas every year. That would be enough to alter the climate 150 million years ago, the study suggests.

Dr. David Wilkinson, from Liverpool John Moore's University, told QMI Agency that doesn't mean the dinosaurs gassed themselves out of existence.
"Extremely unlikely," he said, adding that's an opinion others appear to be putting on the science.

With so many variables, Wilkinson said: "All we have done is to show that it is possible in principle that sauropods (or at least the microbes in them) may have produced enough methane to have a modest climate impact."

Even today, cows alone pump as much as 100 million tonnes of methane up into the Earth's atmosphere, and about 500 million tonnes annually are released from a combination of sources.

But the scientists believe, since dinosaurs weren't the only source of methane gas, overall levels may have been higher than today.
It's not the only glimpse of odd perils faced by dinosaurs included in the issue Current Biology.

In it, Chinese researchers also report they've discovered a giant flea-like insect -- 10 times the size of current dog fleas -- that fed on the soft under-belly of dinosaurs.

CIA foils new al-Qaeda underwear bomb plot against airliner

Does anyone believe this anymore?.

U.S. bomb experts are picking apart a sophisticated new al-Qaeda improvised explosive device, a top Obama administration counterterrorism official said Tuesday, to determine if it could have slipped past airport security and taken down a commercial airplane.Officials told The Associated Press a day earlier that discovery of the unexploded bomb represented an intelligence prize resulting from a covert CIA operation in Yemen, saying that the intercept thwarted a suicide mission.
The device did not contain metal, meaning it probably could have passed through an airport metal detector. But it was not clear whether new body scanners used in many airports would have detected it. The device is an upgrade of the underwear bomb that failed to detonate aboard a jetliner over Detroit on Christmas 2009. Officials said this new bomb was also designed to be used in a passenger's underwear, but this time al-Qaeda developed a more refined detonation system.

Officials worry urinating swimmers may be reason for 500 dead fish

At least that's what a group of anglers contend, blaming swimmers for the 500 dead fish that have turned up in a picturesque German lake near Hamburg, The Local reported.
"Swimmers who urinate in the lake are introducing a lot of phosphate," Manfred Siedler, a spokesman for an angler’s group, told Bild newspaper. "We're calculating half a liter of urine per swimmer per day."
Skeptics questioned whether the outcry was an attempt by fishermen to oust bathers – with whom they have long feuded, according to The Local – but are saying this could be possible.
IO9.com, a Gawker science blog posed the question, “Can anything as natural as peeing in a lake kill the fish?”
The answer, apparently, is yes.

The urine itself doesn’t harm the fish but sets off a series of environmental events that ultimately suffocate the fish.
First, the urine acts as a fertilizer for the blue-green algae in the water. Once they have consumed all the fertilizer, the algae continue sucking up available oxygen in the water, IO9.com explained. When the algae die and start to decompose, they further use up oxygen. That’s when fish start to die.

Bild reported that authorities have poured more than half a million dollars of an anti-phosphate agent called Bentophos into the lake, to no avail.
(Bentophos has been that were shut down due to massive bacterial blooms.)

For now, the lake is closed to swimmers because of the high levels of algae (which can cause swimmer's itch), but the city's environmental authority is fighting the closure, The Local reported.
Kerstin Graupner, a spokeswoman for the environmental authority, told The Local that she blamed natural causes and ice-skaters.

"The ice-skaters make a noise that wakes the fish out of hibernation," Graupner said. "Then they can't breathe and freeze. That's a very common phenomenon."
Graupner’s agency called on a university in Hamburg to test the anglers’ theory. According to The Local, it appears the anglers may have a point – the scientists found anabaena algae blooms, which produce a toxin that ultimately restricts fish breathing.

The German lake isn’t the only place where officials worry about swimmers; signs at the Great Barrier Reef ask swimmers not to urinate in the water. Doing so apparently kills the corals, which grow in low nutrient waters.

Google's employees 70% male, 61% white: report

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc revealed the gender and racial makeup of its 50,000-strong workforce on Wednesday, disclosing a significantly below-average proportion of minorities and women employees that it said was "miles from where we want to be."

Google's disclosure of its workforce demographics represented a rare move for a U.S. company, even if the figures came as no surprise to those familiar with Silicon Valley, an industry long scrutinized for its lack of diversity. Blacks and Hispanics made up just 2% and 3% of overall employees at Google, respectively, while women accounted for 30%, the company said in a detailed blogpost.

That compares with the U.S. workforce average of about 47% women in 2012, according to the Department of Labor. For blacks and people of Hispanic descent, it was 12% and 16%, respectively.

"Put simply, Google is not where we want to be when it comes to diversity, and it's hard to address these kinds of challenges if you're not prepared to discuss them openly, and with the facts," Laszlo Bock, senior vice president of people operations, said in the Wednesday blogpost.

The employment gaps for women and minorities in the tech sector may stem from education, Bock said. Women earn roughly 18% of all computer science degrees in the

United States; blacks and Hispanics make up less than 10% of U.S. college grads and collect fewer than 5% of degrees in computer science majors, respectively, he argued.

But Bock, who added that Google has donated more than US$40 million to organizations promoting computer science education among women, said Google recognized the extent of the internal problem and was open to discussion about possible solutions.

"We've always been reluctant to publish numbers about the diversity of our workforce at Google. We now realize we were wrong, and that it's time to be candid about the issues," he wrote.

Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson attended shareholder meetings at both Google and Facebook earlier this month to raise the issue of racial diversity in the Valley.
