The Origins of “Privilege” | The New Yorker

But the concept really came into its own in the late eighties, when Peggy McIntosh, a women’s-studies scholar at Wellesley, started writing about it. In 1988, McIntosh wrote a paper called “White Privilege and Male Privilege: A Personal Account of Coming to See Correspondences Through Work in Women’s Studies,” which contained forty-six examples of white privilege. (No. 21: “I am never asked to speak for all the people of my racial group.” No. 24: “I can be pretty sure that if I ask to talk to the ‘person in charge,’ I will be facing a person of my race.”) Those examples have since been read by countless schoolkids and college students—including, perhaps, Tal Fortgang, the Princeton freshman whose recent article, “Checking My Privilege,” has been widely debated.

Certainly privilege can give someone an advantage "If they choose to take advantage of it"
Certainly those without the privilege have to work harder or take other routes to get ahead.
It is the ones that sit on their collective butts and cry that "I cant get ahead so someone should give it to me" or "I am owed what you got"
Take a look at the video and look at the people standing at the rear with the look at them expression on their face. That is what I am getting at!
If you want something put yourself in a position to get it. Then you will appreciate what you have more because you will know what it took to get it.

DILLIGAF

It's easy.

Let's take gender identity as an example. Or sexual orientation.

If you are a heterosexual men you don't ever have to worry about being called "heterophobic" slurs, get fired from a job because of your sexual orientation, get beaten up or even killed because of your sexual orientation. You don't ever have to worry about whether a country you go to has laws against heterosexual people or see signs saying "God hates straights".

And likewise if you are a cis-gender woman (compared to trans-gender woman) you don't ever have to worry about being told you're not a real woman because of your genitalia, get kicked out of the washroom because they doubt your gender identity, or get beaten or even killed because of your gender identity. As a cis-woman you can go to a washroom or work without the fear of being called slurs like "tranny" or get fired because your boss thinks trans women are icky.

Privilege is basically hurdles in life that you don't have to think about because it doesn't cater to you. It may happen at a small scale (i.e. there are people who dislike heterosexual cis men) but it's not something that happens on a SYSTEMIC scale. A person may dislike a heterosexual cis man but it has nothing to do with his sexual orientation or gender identity.

Prilivege is intersectional and one person can be priliveged in one way and not or even discriminated again in another.

Of course heterosexual men have situations of discrimination, steroe-type, judgment, etc.

A woman will be more fearful of a straight man over a gay man. Straight men have more of chance to be accused of false rape then gay men. Straight men are held to a higher code sexually in society then gay men. A straight man will be socially castrated for cheating on his wife, but a gay man stepping out on his gay lover is “meh”

White people have certain priliveges that POC do not. We all know that but some of us are able to see that being a young strong white straight man has some disadvantages in life was well. There is nothing wrong with saying that.

This does not negate in any way what POC, LGTBQ community, religious believers, etc experience in their disadvantages.

But there are are so many intersectional components now that need to be looked.

Which is why a brown gay female will suffer 3 types of disadvantage for being the “Brown”, “Gay” and “female” sides of discrimination.

While a straight white male will have the 3 types of advantages those bring.

Which then brings about 6 types of separation between the people and that is how you truly message prilivege in my opinion.

I'm with you....but not with the generalization. A brown gay female may suffer 3 types of disadvantage.......or they may turn into advantages in some situations.

My point is that you have to look at each situation individually and get past this entire mindset of "all people of x are this way and all people of y are that way". People are individuals and interact as such. Why throw them all into a group of any kind and then pass judgement on the entire population?

Except this is not a generalization. This is fact, backed up by data from years of research. You can google any of it if you wish, but I have a feeling you know it is true. When the opposite happens like you purpose, that is an exception the situation. Which is great, and there is nothing to say that you can't thrive regardless of your disadvantages. I don't think anyone said that.

I will add one addition that location does play a factor. IE a white male in the west will experience more privilege then in another country overseas. So a brown gay female could have those as advantages somewhere in the world maybe, but let's be real - West or East - she is having issues because of how she was born.

To dismiss what privilege is and how it affects the communities around the world, because of "exceptions" is an actual narrow minded view instead of an open-minded one. In my opinion of course.
