A month or so ago, myself and another coworker were called into the store manager's office. The reason being we hadn't booked our holidays yet, and that was to be done back in April/May.
Well my coworker explained she wanted to take a couple of weeks at X Mas, but before she did she wanted to make sure of her plans. So she filled in the little holiday calender, and off she went.
Then it was my turn. 'Dave, have you given any thoughts to holidays this year?" "Not really." "Dave, how many weeks did you use last year?" "Umm, one I think." "How many were you entitled to?" "Two." "How many did you use the year before that?" "Don't know." "You know everyone deserves some time off, and time out of here?" *shrug* "And being a steward, you should know you're taking 40 hours away from your brothers and sisters, for each week you don't take." *shrug* "Also, the company will not pay out for unused holiday time." "That's fine." "Dave, I want you to check off three weeks for your vacation, now." Well by now, I've had enough, and just want to get out of there and back to work. So I just randomly check off three weeks. One in Sept, one in Oct and one in Nov, I think.
So far this week, I've had two of my fellow stewards approach me, at management's bequest, to speak to me about taking my vacation time. It would appear that this was one of the weeks I had booked. :unknw:
Why is it so hard for people to grasp that not everyone wants or needs to take time off. I don't care if I have a week off or not. I take a week off, what the fuck do I do? I know full damned well I can't train for 8+ hours a day, my body won't take it. And sitting around the house doing nothing will drive me stir crazy. I don't really have any interests in travel, besides I can't really afford it, nor do I have a passport. (Though my therapist did recommend it "try it, you might like it."
I'd like it so much if they just left me alone, and let me work. If I've read the Employment Standards Act, I don't have to take holidays if I'm entitled to them. Why can't people grasp that?
