How fast is the internet speed at Starbucks and Second Cup WIFI? Want to buy a laptop and use the free WIFI at these coffee shops.

Well, they use standard service (Rogers, etc) and you share the connection with everyone there, so it's not as fast as home unless the place is empty. And they don't buy the premium speed package, just the basic. service.

It is fast enough but not secure so be careful.

Well, speed being a relative term. How fast is fast and how slow is slow? To those with fibreoptic service, slow is 6 mbps but to people on dial up, that's blazing fast.

Seriouly though, you're going to buy a laptop just so you can use wifi at coffeeshops? btw, McDonald's offer this service too as well as many other places.....

If I were you I'd think about a tablet PC.....these days you can get one for around $120 that will be fine for surfing the net etc......

I wandered into both my local Starbucks and McDonalds yesterday. Both offer free wifi. Both have basic service running at around 2Mbps on speedtest.net with a very light load of people in the facility.

They have wi-fi at the library as well but I noticed it's slower than Timmy's, Starbucks or McDonalds.
Swiss Chalet is the closest one to me and I like their soup. :good:

Really hard to surf my favorite porn sites at these joints. The bandwidth just ain't good enough to support the streaming video feeds. Makes me wonder why I bother dropping trou there... :biggrin2:
