Man updates PC with Windows 10 and wakes up to his NSFW collection slideshow on repeat

Among the millions of happy Windows 10 upgraders is a very unhappy soul. A user who goes by the name of FalloutBoS on Reddit may be the first of Windows 10 users to be left red-faced after upgrading to Microsoft’s new operating system when his adult image catalogue began blinking across his screen in a slideshow on repeat.

Pretty much like millions other Windows users, FalloutBoS was as excited to upgrade to the Microsoft’s latest operating system. He upgraded to the new software and left it to ‘do its thing’ overnight, only to be woken by his wife asking why his collection of NSFW images was rotating on the desktop view.

Apparently FalloutBoS seems to have been a victim of a slightly controversial feature on Windows 10 which pulls images from the users default pictures gallery and plays them in a loop on the screen. Little did FalloutBoS imagine that he would fall prey to this default feature which left him red faced in the front of his wife.

The feature can easily be turned off, with a simple right click and press of ‘turn live tile off’.

However, FalloutBoS has an advise for all Windows upgraders to Windows 10 “Don’t make my mistake, keep your private pictures out of My Pictures, no matter how deep you hide them in subfolders.

Windows 10 is, mostly, pretty good. Here's some downright shitty things you should know and turn off.

Turn off all the excessive sycing. By default, Windows 10 will sync some pretty ridiculous shit to their servers - WiFi names, passwords, Browser history, all sorts of shit. Turn it all off if you want to maintain some semblance of privacy by following this:https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...dows-10-a.html

Speaking of WiFi, Windows decided that it will automatically grant access to your network to anyone on your friends lists. Then, once it's shared, your friends will automatically share your network information with their friends list. This is horseshit. To turn this off, go to Settings->Network & Internet->Wi-Fi->Manage Wi-Fi settings, and then disable basically everything. This will disable everything on your end - this will not stop your friends from sharing your shit. To do that, you have to name your network to have a specific name - YourNetworkNameHere_optout. Adding _optout will stop the sharing bullshit.

Opt Out of personalized ads. . Just do this one.

Windows 10, again by default, will use your bandwidth to update other people's instances of Windows 10. MS made this decision - to have this turned on my default - in order to save costs, and instead pass this cost on to you. This is horseshit. Turn this thing off by going to Start->Settings->Update & Security->Windows Update->Advanced options, and set your internet settings correctly. If you have a metered connection, or if you tell windows that you do, this behaviour is disabled.

More information about the above:

Microsoft accused of Windows 10 upgrade 'nasty trick'

Microsoft has faced criticism for changing the pop-up box encouraging Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10.
Clicking the red cross on the right hand corner of the pop-up box now activates the upgrade instead of closing the box.
And this has caused confusion as typically clicking a red cross closes a pop-up notification
The upgrade could still be cancelled, when the scheduled time for it to begin appeared, Microsoft said

The change occurred because the update is now labelled "recommended" and many people have their PCs configured to accept recommended updates for security reasons.
This means dismissing the box does not dismiss the update.
Brad Chacos, senior editor at the PC World website, described it as a "nasty trick".

"Deploying these dirty tricks only frustrates long-time Windows users who have very valid reasons to stick with operating systems they already know and love," he wrote.
Microsoft said: "With the free Windows 10 upgrade offer ending on 29 July, we want to help people upgrade to the best version of Windows.

"As we shared in October, Windows 10 will be offered as a 'recommended' update for Windows 7 and 8.1 customers whose Windows Update settings are configured to accept 'recommended' updates.
"Customers can choose to accept or decline the Windows 10 upgrade."

Microsoft has agreed to pay a Californian woman $10,000 (£7,500) after an automatic Windows 10 update left her computer unusable.

Teri Goldstein said her Windows 7 computer had automatically tried to update itself to Windows 10 without her permission.

She said the update had made her machine unstable, leaving her unable to use it to run her business.

Microsoft said it had dropped its appeal to save on legal costs.

Microsoft has been aggressively pushing the latest version of its widely used operating system, which is currently available as a free download for computers running Windows 7 and 8.

However, many people have chosen not to upgrade, because they are running old hardware, have software that does not run on Windows 10, are concerned over the software's tracking features, or simply do not want it.

In February, the company bundled Windows 10 in with its security updates and made it a "recommended update", which meant it was automatically downloaded and installed unless blocked by the user.

Some people accused the company of trying to "trick" customers into installing the update.

The Seattle Times reported that Ms Goldstein's computer had "slowed to a crawl" after the update, and Microsoft customer support had not fixed the problem.

"I had never heard of Windows 10. Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to update," she told the newspaper.

Microsoft is to offer "clearer options" for users upgrading - or not - to Windows 10.

The move comes following months of criticism that Windows 10 was being forced upon users using what has been described as a "nasty trick".

This week, a Seattle woman successfully sued the company for $10,000 over disruption caused by the software installing without, she said, permission.

In recent months, in an apparent bid to accelerate adoption of Windows 10, Microsoft altered the way it asked users if they wanted to upgrade. It gave the Windows 10 update "recommended" status, normally reserved for critical security updates.

If when prompted to update to Windows 10 users clicked the red "X", the upgrade would not immediately start. However, the update process would automatically be scheduled for a later time.

From this week, Microsoft said it would change that process, admitting that it was confusing.

"The new experience has clearer options to upgrade now, choose a time, or decline the free offer," said Terry Myerson, executive vice president, Windows and Devices Group, in an emailed statement. "If the red-x is selected on this new dialog, it will dismiss the dialog box and we will notify the device again in a few days.

"We continue to recommend all of our customers upgrade to Windows 10 before the free upgrade offer expires on July 29."

Microsoft is resolute in promoting Windows 10 as a better computing experience with added security features over previous versions of the operating system.

Some users, however, are reluctant to upgrade citing worries about the strain the software may put on hardware, and suggestions that Windows 10 tracks its users too closely.

To date, around 300 million devices worldwide have upgraded to, or are using, Windows 10.

Here is how you can increase your reduced Internet speed due to Windows 10 Anniversary update

As with every update, Microsoft engineers borked big time with Windows 10 Anniversary update released last week. The Windows 10 Anniversary update brought up Error 0x80070057 and 0xa0000400 and the dead Cortana bug to the Windows 10 users. We have already written here about how you can fix those.

But now Windows 10 users are reporting a new and unique problem they are facing after updating to Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Many users have noted in various forums that their Internet speeds have greatly decreased once they have updated their PC/laptops with the anniversary update.

While Microsoft has not yet taken cognizance of this being a bug or a major issue with its Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Windows 10 troubleshooting website, Ghacks has found that the decreased internet speed problem may be occuring to a Windows feature called Window Auto-Tuning. Microsoft first introduced this feature in Windows Vista and has included in every version of its operating system since, including Windows 10.

Window Auto-Tuning improves performance for programs which receive TCP data over a network, and it’s enabled by default. Ghacks notes that while Window Auto Tuning may not be the actual problem, it could cause reduced speeds in some Windows 10 run PC/laptops.

If you are one of those Windows 10 PC/laptop owners who are experiencing reduced Internet speeds due to Windows 10 Anniversary update, you have got to try out this neat trick to see if it solves your problem: https://www.techworm.net/2016/08/neat-trick-will-help-increase-internet-speed-windows-10.html

LG Unveils A Smart Fridge With Windows 10

The LG Smart InstaView Door-In-Door Refrigerator comes with a 21.5-inch translucent touchscreen, which you can use to interact with Windows 10 backed with 2GB of RAM and an Intel Atom processor. It also supports Microsoft’s personal assistant Cortana and offers access to the full range of Windows Store apps and Live Tiles, plus some LG apps too.

The fridge has other cool features too, like double tapping on the screen makes it translucent, allowing you to see the contents of your fridge without opening the door. The bottom of the refrigerator has a smart sensor that opens the door automatically when you step into the light projection. You can also apply different temperatures at various sections of the fridge.

Further, LG’s own Windows 10 apps are designed so that users can drag and drop icons against the food item in the fridge in case they wish to leave a note on any food item, add recipes and healthy information about meals, set a timer, or simply mark food that you can see through the translucent display.
