Would you travel to Cuba after this?

After being trapped in the communist country for three months, the emphatic words were music to Cody’s long suffering ears. The 19-year-old’s life has been in limbo since since April when he was involved in a nasty crash while driving a rental car, an accident he maintains was not his fault. Cody has never been charged with anything, yet he has lived in fear during his detention in Cuba because he was told he faces up to three-years in prison.

Cody LeCompte’s tropical island nightmare is finally coming to an end.
The Simcoe teen, his mom Danette, and his uncle, Gary Parmenter, attended a dramatic meeting at a police station here Wednesday where they learned the wheels have been set in motion for Cody’s release, torontosun.com has learned.

“We don’t want to keep you here any longer,” Cuban officials told the LeCompte family through their lawyer.

Why did it take our Government 3 months to get him out. ????

Government says they could not interfere in the judicial process of another country.

Cant say I blame them. Keep in mind there are MANY cases where Canadian, USA, UK etc citizens have been held far longer in worse situations in 3rd world countries.

So what would we do? Invade?

And I would NOT go to Cuba. No interest in hot destinations anyway, and a warning that if you want the cheap trip in these hell hole countries (yah I know, many are worse than Cuba)

STAY in your luxury resort!

.

Cuba is a safe inexpensive holiday . Just don't rent a vehicle there because you will get screwed if involved in an accident . I was warned by a friend who has been there many times and strongly advised against renting a car .Taxi's are cheap .

I was with a group in Mexico once where one of the guys rented a motorcycle and wrapped it around a post . He was told pay $2K in damages or go to jail . He paid .
BTW don't rent a motorcycle in Mexico  . If there is a dispute about payment both the owner and the renter may end up in jail and stay there till an agreement is reached .

Fact is you are in a country with rules that are a little different than our own . You need to learn do's and don't's of any country you visit .

I will certainly return to Cuba again .

$20 or $50 to the first cop on the scene and all is good.
Kid just did not understand that he was being hustled. Discretely pay a bribe and your vacation troubles disappear.

Yeah, I would go to Cuba, or anywhere else for that matter. You don't have to be in a foreign country to get screwed over.

I agree, why rent anything? I remember in Jamaica I rented a cab and a driver for 5 hrs for $50.00 and he took us to the REAL jamaica, not the tourist one.

I always get a kick out of the movies and stories about college kids moving drugs into and out of foreign countries and then thrown in jail for life.....boo hoo hoo you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know you do NOT break ANY laws when you're in another country...especially one like thailand, china, or anywhere in indonesia......

when i went to cuba we talked to one of the organizers of the volleyball events and on his day off asked him if we rented him a scooter and covered lunch and drinks for him for the day if he would mind showing us around.

he warned us that drinking and a scooter was a bad idea cause if any damages come to the rentals we will have our passports taken away till a settlement was reached. so the day that we organized with him he and his cousin met us off the resort with 4 scooters from there friends or family .

the whole day cost us about 150cuc$ and that got us the scooters the resort guy and his cousin all sorts of drinks and food in town , and then at night after the even when we met the cousin at a bar he told us to come back to we were treated like kings he got us bottle service for free ( i think he just knew someone and purchased the bottles elsewhere) our own section and kept bringing us hotties to dance with the whole night .

that kid was kept cause the damages on the other vechicle was disputed . i read they racked up 30k in debt over this matter . i am almost 100% sure unless they killed someone paying off who they hit 1k and another 1k to the owner of the vechicle would have got them home faster.

i wonder how house arrest at a resort works ?
