Anyone else think Jack Eichel might be the real #1?

Dunno why, but I get the sense that the team that selects Jack Eichel is going to be the true BIG winner of this year's amateur draft. McDavid just seems to soft to be a big time impact player in the modern day NHL.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Eichel have huge success right out of the gate, while McDavid struggles for a few years.

Have been told that he has the same hockey instincts like Gretzky. In other words, you can be soft but if you have eyes behind your eyes they can't touch you.

He's coming out of the American College system though which always scares me with prospects. Limited schedule and competition could be an issue. Whereas McDavid is coming from the best junior development league in the world.

My problem is that McDavid didn't real blow anyone away during the World Junior, where he probably should have dominated against his own level of competition (wrist notwithstanding) but Eichel looked pretty damn special playing for the US during the World Championships. Eichel looks/plays more like a man to me, where my suspicion is that McDavid did well in weak league when the OHL's talent level is on a down cycle.

Personally, I think championship teams are built starting from the back end first. A solid goalie and 2-3 stud defensemen can carry a team deep even if they only win games by low scoring 1-goal margins due to average talent at the forward positions.

If you're talking Leafs? I'd either pick a potential stud D-man in the draft (like Hanifin), trade the pick and some warm bodies to acquire a stud D-man from someone with cap problems (8-10 teams have BIG cap problems), or sign a stud UFA like Martin or Ehrhoff in PITT, Kimmo Timonen in PHI, Johnny Oduya or Brent Seabrook in CHI.

The leafs could also look to trade the pick to acquire a significant upgrade on Bernier in goal...maybe one of Kuemper, Dubnyk, or Backstrom in MIN, Darling in CHI, or Cam Talbot in NYR.

Probably not many, but in the case of the Leafs I honestly doubt it will make any difference in the short term. Shanny and Babby have already decided which way the wind will blow in Toronto for at least the next 5-7 years, so picking a handful of kids and/or making a few obvious trades should be a no-brainer for them.

Yrs 2-3 will likely need more dedicated attention from a full time GM/Cap Guru to look after the tier 2, 3, and 4 problems that come with running a hockey franchise.

I know kids that have played with and against McDavid since he was in minor atom, this kid is the real deal, a true generation player, no disrespect to Eichel but McDavid will be better overall in the long run. That said Eichel will no doubt be a dam good player and have a great career as well. Too bad the leafs screwed up the draft pick lotto too, they can't even lose right!!

I suspect McDavid gets pounded hard by every team EDM faces next season (if he actually finishes the season without a major injury, I'll be surprised) and he winds up with at least 25 pts less than Eichel.

I feel bad for the Kid stuck in Edmonton for 3 years. Pretty unlikely he stays past the 3rd season, Oilers will likely have to trade him before he just leaves to sign elsewhere.
