ATM security alert as Microsoft prepares to kill off Windows XP

Withdrawing of support for XP will not affect ATMs in any way, ATMs are very rarely connected to the internet and as such are not prone to updates or virus problems.

If they work why fix them?

Well the big problem is core fragmentation which means that they have to be recycled every few days. W7 would not fix this anyway so there is really no incentive to upgrade.

The chips in ATMs tend to be p1 or p11 with about 512mb and small HDDs I have seen ATMs in service which are 15 or so years old.

They would not even load Vista let alone W7.

yes and no on the internet connection.

The Cash Machines found in gas stations and stores are connected either through dial up or an Ethernet cable. Those on Ethernet do use the internet to attach to their servers to record and verify funds.

I gots the feeling Microsoft will find a good reason for XP support as opposed to risking the ire of banking customers

Something for something gives you nothing.
