Rob Ford’s former staffers’ emails, telephone records ordered destroyed: sources

Emails and telephone records in Mayor Rob Ford’s office are in danger of disappearing, the Star has learned.

The electronic records, which may reveal knowledge of discussions of the video scandal, were ordered destroyed this week. Sources say people who were told to delete the records are balking at the order.

One source the Star spoke to was alarmed at the potential loss of “evidence of attempts” to locate and retrieve a video of Ford smoking crack cocaine and making homophobic and racial slurs.

The records in question were held on the City Hall server and belonged to departed staff members Mark Towhey, George Christopolous and Isaac Ransom. Towhey was fired for telling the Mayor to seek addiction help; the other two resigned Monday after their communications advice was ignored.

Asked by the Star whether emails of Christopoulos and Ransom were destroyed, Ford’s acting chief of staff, Earl Provost, said, “I'm sorry, you should talk to Sunny about that.” Sunny Petrujkic is Ford’s acting press secretary.

When Star reporter David Rider interjected, “But you would know if,” Provost said, “Sorry Dave, I can't talk to you about that. Sorry.”

Petrujkic did not respond when asked if there was an order to destroy the emails of Christopoulos and Ransom.

“I'm busy with this,” he said gesturing at reporters waiting to go into the mayor's office for a press conference.

Officials in the information technology department at the City of Toronto are required to maintain the computers and ensure that information — which is all subject to freedom of information requests — is preserved.

The Star established earlier this week that discussions were held within Mayor Ford’s office regarding the possible whereabouts of the video. Logistics director David Price asked Towhey “hypothetically” what should Price do if he knew the location of the video. Towhey’s response was to tell Price to go to police. Towhey ultimately contacted police, gave a statement, and Price did the same.

Toronto Police have only said they “are monitoring” the video situation.

Now the Globe and Mail with this.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is not answering questions about why two members of his staff talked to police about a video he has insisted does not exist.

Mr. Ford, at City Hall on Tuesday for a day-long meeting of his executive, tried to turn the page on allegations he was caught on camera smoking crack cocaine, but failed to deflect a constant barrage of questions about how much he and his staff knew about the alleged video.
“People are looking for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and right now, people are not satisfied,” said councillor John Parker, once regarded as a member of the mayor’s camp, predicting the questions will continue. The video allegations, now in their second week, are attracting international attention, most recently a segment on CNN in the United States.

The Globe and Mail has reported that Mr. Ford’s then chief of staff, Mark Towhey, went to the police after a tip from Dave Price, a staffer in the mayor’s office and long-time friend of the Ford family.

On May 17, the day after the website Gawker broke the video story, Mr. Price told Mr. Towhey he had reliable information about the location of the video, a source in the mayor’s office said. He gave an address and a unit on Dixon Road, and Mr. Towhey told him not to try to find the video, a source said. The source said Mr. Price added that his informant told him the video’s original owner was killed by someone for it. Police have since said the interviews are not related to any ongoing homicide investigation.

According to the source, Mr. Price insisted to Mr. Towhey the intelligence was dependable, and Mr. Towhey gave the information to police. Police confirmed members of its homicide squad interviewed Mr. Towhey and the force took a statement from Mr. Price. Neither the mayor nor Mr. Price responded to requests for comment.

When asked about his staff’s knowledge of the video on Tuesday, the mayor said: “Ask my staff.”

The mayor’s brother, Councillor Doug Ford, said he had no knowledge of the video or the tip from Mr. Price, telling reporters: “If anyone ever approached me with a video, I’d call the police, instantly.”

The mayor said on his Sunday radio show that the video does not exist.

The mayor used a late-day news conference to go on the attack, lashing out at proposed provincial transit taxes, and talking up his own cost-cutting efforts. When asked again about his staff’s involvement in the search for the video, he responded,“I have addressed those concerns,” and ended the press conference.

What a joke. At least one senior staffer gave a sworn statement as to possible whereabouts of a video that doesn't exist....

Now there's allegations that correspondence has been ordered to be destroyed?

This train wreck is going down FAST

More juicy stuff.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford told senior aides not to worry about a video appearing to show him smoking crack cocaine because he knew where it was, sources told the Star.

Ford then blurted out the address of two 17th-floor units — 1701 and 1703 — at a Dixon Rd. apartment complex, to the shock of staffers at a city hall meeting almost two weeks ago, the sources said.

The mayor cited “our contacts” as the source of his information, according to insiders familiar with the unusual May 17 session in his office.

Staffers were alarmed by the implication of hearing so precise a location, sources said.

[h=2]Second arrest in murder of man who appears in photo with Mayor Rob Ford[/h]
Police have arrested a second suspect in the shooting death of Anthony Smith , the man who appears in a photo withMayor Rob Ford provided to the Star by the same people who have a video that appears to show the mayor smoking crack.

The RCMP arrested Hanad Mohamed, 23, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, last Friday after a nation-wide warrant for his arrest was issued.

He has been charged with first-degree murder and will appear in a Toronto court Friday.

Nisar Hashimi, also 23, turned himself in April 4 after he was named as a suspect. He has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in the death of Smith and shooting of Muhammad Khattak , the other man pictured with Ford.

Ford has denied the existence of the video and says he does not smoke crack.

Gawker editor John Cook debated the ethics of the decision to publish the Ford video story with Jeffrey Dvorkin, a University of Toronto professor and former CBC journalist, on Tuesday's episode of Q with Jian Ghomeshi.

You can hear the podcast of that conversation HERE.

And this just posted by the Globe and Mail:

An editor in the Toronto Sun newsroom received a call from someone shopping around the video that is alleged to show mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine before Gawker and the Star broke the story almost two weeks ago, but the offer was short on specifics and did not mention drug use, according to the paper’s editor, so it was dismissed.
. . .

“The question that was put, was – would we be willing to pay for a Rob Ford story, there was some video that they had,” James Wallace said in an interview on Tuesday afternoon. “My understanding is there was no mention of crack, no mention of the mayor smoking. It was a generic inquiry whether we paid for stories, and that there was a video that would be embarrassing to the mayor.”
Noting that would not be unusual – he cited the video showing the mayor emerging from a KFC outlet during a public weight-loss campaign – Mr. Wallace said the editor likely dismissed the potential news value of the offer.
. . .

He added: “If we had the video, if we determined the video was legitimate, we would post it in a New York minute.”

Going on record with my hypothesis (Will quote with "I told you so!" at the appropriate time.)

1. The video is real and it is damning.

2. Robbie knew/knows where the video is kept (or where it was filmed).

3. Robbie told his senior staff in confidence, including Price.

4. Price asked Towhey for advice with the hypothetical "what would you do?"

5. Towhey gave a sworn statement to the cops about the location of the video, specifically referring to Price as his source.

6. Towhey was fired for breaching the circle of trust.

7. Dumbass drug dealing dipshits finally realize that hawking the video is drawing a lot of attention to themselves. If and when the video is sold, a lot more attention will come their way. They go dark.

8. Ford breaks his silence with "It doesn't exist." and "I don't do crack." Why the sudden bravado and blanket denial? Because Ford's allies have secured and destroyed the video? YES

9. PR guys freak out. They know that Ford is lying. They refuse to lie for him. PR guys resign.

10. Oh snap! Multiple copies of the video exist. Someone calls the SUN and makes inquiries.

It's only a matter of time.

Makes perfect sense to me

11. After several months of denying allegations about substance abuse, Rob Ford agrees to undergo drug testing knowing full well any traces will be gone from his system.

Ford calculates his abstinence enforced by public scrutiny has saved him at least $$,$$$ in rehab bills. Makes mental note to add that amount in next time he boasts about saving taxpayers money.

Makes perfect sense to me
Come and get me when there is more than idle speculation, theories and rumours which are proliferating mainly because no one likes the guy. The whole thing is like some stupid soap opera that otherwise sane people have become addicted to. It is a sad day when people are more worried about Ford's staffers destroying e-mails than they are about the Provincial Liberals doing the same thing to cover up the gas plant fiasco. I guess a mayor smoking crack is more important than politicians throwing away $600 million just so they can get re-elected.

From Twitter account. The Equalizer @Thefixer12.

Ft. McMurray RCMP have warrant for Hanad Mohamed's Phone & have viewed Ford video. Hanad has said Ford called and threatened him

My sources within TO Metro PD say Ford, and several other associated on surveillance video at Dixon road complex

Hanad Mohamed, told RCMP that Rob Ford was a good customer. But when Tony smith was shot Ford called told his to keep his mouth shut

That is another way to look at it , which is also not wrong. In fact neither one is right or wrong. We will see how it plays out and if he in deed did smoke crack with drug dealers it will come out and if he did not then that will come out. There will always be something to talk about and there will always be more then one view on things.

I stand by my right to my opinion and yes what RAWD says makes sense to me (sticking to the topic of course)

Hardly. It's more than idle speculation. Facts are unfurling, from which we can draw inferences.

The Libs will fry in the next election. That's why Wynne happily bent over for the NDP to pass the budget. In any case, some taxpayers will support the plant closures no matter what the cost. I hardly think anyone supports a crack smoking mayor. Also, the Libs haven't denied what they did. They just deny knowledge of the cost. Ford has a record of lying and seems to be lying now. If he owned up to it, a lot more people would be forgiving. A LOT of people like the guy. I voted for him because of his platform. It's the deception that is offensive. Destroying what is potentially probative evidence is offensive.

Btw, two more staffers have resigned; his EA and his advisor on council relations. Also meaningless trivia?

I totally concur with you on Rob Ford. I'm sorry LG but Rob and Doug are bullies and cannot get anything done because they've turned the council against them.

As for the Libs, the polls are clear that if another election was held today, Wynn may come out of it with a majority. Hudak needs to step down and a new leader appointed that can bring the conservatives into power. Believe it or not until this circus started with Ford I would have though Doug would have made a great provincial leader.
