I was reading this and started laughing. But it's not a laughing matter to some.

PLANO, Texas -Residents in one Plano apartment complex will soon have to scoop their dog's poop or face a big stink when management tests it for DNA.
Northside at Legacy recently posted a notice on residents' doors informing them that they needed to provide a DNA sample from their pet.

"Once the registry is complete, any feces found on the property will be checked for DNA and the pet owner will be fined $250. If the fine is not paid, the rental agreement will be terminated. If you fail to register your pet, you will be fined $250 and risk termination of your rental agreement as well," the notice states.

According to the letter, the tests will be conducted by Tennessee-based PooPrints. The company says on its website that properties using its services report an almost immediate reduction in dog poop.
Some at Northside like the idea.

Danielle Lay doesn't mind giving up her dog's DNA because she said the problem has gotten pretty bad.
"I agree with it because there's a lot of people who unfortunately are not picking up after their dogs," she said.
Others called it nonsense.

"It's crazy. What's the world coming to? Taking DNA from a dog and matching it to the poop? That's nuts," said Michael Guyer.
Although he admits he can't walk in a straight line on some of the sidewalks without stepping in the stuff, he still thinks's the idea is insane. It's a little too much Big Brother for him.
"That's why I'm laughing. It's the craziest thing I've ever heard. It's like 1984. Like, what other things are they going to come up with to do something like this," he said.

The complex said it has only had one complaint so far about the new policy. It also believes doggie DNA testing is only going to become more and more common.

Would video surveillance not be easier? and safer in other other regards as well????

You would have to hire a couple of people to be viewing it 24 hours a day. Looking at a price tag of $100,000 per year.

That is why I don't own a dog. I'm not picking up anyone's doo doo.

No you wouldn't.

First week - you watch at the peeks times. First thing in the morning, after school and bed time.

Bust a couple of people, and see how fast most others stop.

From then it is not hard to rewind to times you know something happened.

I have done surveillance, it is not as time consuming for something like this and it would be needed often as time when on.

It is very time consuming. By the time you pay the labor it won't make sense.

Paying the labor of what????

The landlord spends an hour maybe rewinding through a weeks worth of footage.

You don't need someone monitoring 24/7. Why would you? That would make no sense.

You think it makes more sense to send samples of shit to be tested for DNA??????

You don't have to catch these people in real time. Even the DNA idea would be after the fact.

I can right now watch up to a weeks worth of footage on my ipad. This is where I am home or away. Works on wifi or data plan. Cheap and easy.
Would literally take me an hour to rewind through the whole thing. I pick up every thing. Cameras have motion logs, you can skip right to when motion occurs.

A month of this a 1 hour a week, fines being given out with video footage so it can't be disputed, the issue would be resolved in no time at all. And then you have the camera available still in case something happens down the road.

DNA sampling dog shit is simply idiotic.

I agree, have a kid - clean up after them

Have a pet - clean up after them.

It makes sense to me.

Is there not a law on the books that forbid landlords to evict based on having pets?

I have large self seal envelopes, pre-addressed to Madman. Scoop, seal and mail. All tidy.

That was my question, is it not illegal to put that on the lease.

I get what you are say. If you know before hand you can screen. People do it all the time with race based tenants too.

But I could have swore their was a law on the books about it being illegal to evict based on pet and it is illegal to put in a lease.
