TORONTO - Mayor Rob Ford’s niece stepped into controversy Wednesday after telling women “don’t dress like a whore” to avoid becoming victims.
Krista Ford — one of Councillor Doug Ford’s daughters — posted a message on her Twitter account Wednesday giving advice to women shortly after Toronto Police held a press conference about a rash of sex assaults downtown.

“Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes & don’t dress like a whore. #DontBeAVictim #StreetSmart” she wrote on her Twitter account, @kristaford.
The tweet has since been removed.

Ford’s tweet came just after Toronto Police warned residents in the Bloor and Christie Sts. area that four women in the last two weeks had been sexually assaulted.
Early last year, a Toronto Police officer warned women in a York University law class that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”

That comment, which the officer later apologized for, prompted the start of the SlutWalk protest in April 2011. The march has since become a global phenomenon aimed at condemning the belief that a woman’s way of dressing makes her a target.
Krista Ford has been in the public spotlight before.

Ford made headlines last year when she signed up for the city’s new Lingerie Football League team, the Toronto Triumph.
She was named captain of the Triumph, but in October Ford and several of her teammates quit.

Mayor Ford's office has yet to comment on the incident, and neither Krista or Doug Ford could immediately be reached for comment.
SlutWalk Toronto took to its Twitter account, @SlutWalkTO, Thursday to respond to Ford's comment.

"(Krista Ford's) tweet was victim-blaming and misguided," the organization tweeted. "That said, harassing, slut-shaming, name-calling, threatening her is not helpful."
In a second tweet, the group encouraged Ford to get in touch if she has any questions.

"We hope you're open to understanding why your statements upset people and learn," the tweet concluded.

But those that don't are going use this as a political platform to further their own interests.

I'm sensing that she will bow to the pressure and issue a retraction with an apology.

i tend to agree.....and I bet there won't be any protests/marches over it because, afterall, she's a woman....and yeah, she probably meant don't walk the streets dressed like that.

Now I know it isn't the only thing that would attract a sexual predator, but know why animals have markings the way they do? to avoid becoming prey......know why peacocks (especially the male ones) make easy prey? because they stand out........

As I said in another thread, women should be allowed to dress how they want, go out alone at all hours of the night, and walk in dark parking lots.......but unfortunately, they can't, not in our free society.......I say free society because the freedom that allows us to walk in dark parking lots and or dress how we want also gives predators access to victims......

I believe the responsibility lies in the man (the person who should be respectful and control himself, guard his and her modesty).

not to judge but Ms. Ford has to be careful with the hypocrisy…if she was trying to be funny..she should have tried harder.
