Windsor man arrested for stealing woman’s social identity

A Windsor man is facing a slew of charges after a woman police say may have spurned his advances had her Facebook account hijacked by him, with false accusations and explicit sexual language posted to family and friends in her name.
Sgt. Paul Jean said Wednesday the victim, a local professional, was fired from her job over false Facebook postings that suggested she could be a prostitute or stripper.
She was reinstated after police contacted her employer, Jean said.
Police believe the 20-year-old woman borrowed a mobile device or laptop from the accused 32-year-old man in the weeks prior to Oct. 14, 2012, to check her Facebook account, but did not log off.
In the ensuing months police say the accused used his access to her account to change her privacy settings, log in passwords, and other things on her Facebook page.
“We are concerned for the individual’s well-being, posting false accusations that she could be a prostitute for hire, that she dances at a local strip club or adult entertainment parlour, all of which is false,” said Jean, a member of the police morality unit, which became involved in the investigation because of the sexual nature of the crimes.
“To her character, that’s dangerous to her because she is a professional in the local community,” he said.
“I can indicate that because of the actions of this individual she was let go at some point in time from her job, and not until police contacted the employer that she was reinstated, and we’re happy about that.”
Changes in privacy settings on her page, and the nature of the posts, led to hundreds of new users gaining access to her page, police said.
