Talked to my local. Each store sets their own hours based on volume i.e. sales. LCBO will not loose a $ of sale in this competitive market. Balance that with it's responsible mandate. Never will be a 24hr operation.

No one ever loses a $ of sale, when they have a monopoly, for all intents and purposes. That also allows the retailer to set their own price, rather than allowing it to be established by 'supply and demand'. Competition leads to competitive pricing, which leads to a lower profit margin. No large corporation wants profits to decrease. That leads to lower prices for stock in the company, and the rich don't get richer as quickly.

Stock up before midnight tonight before the strike.

Customers at downtown LCBO locations are loading up on their booze ahead of a potential strike of 8,000 employees on Monday.

Fear not. Ontario’s Liberal government is pulling out all the stops to prevent any work stoppages from breaching the labour peace. That means letting public sector workers have their way on pay these days.Teachers came first, in February, months before their contracts were due to expire. Next came OPSEU workers, well in advance of their deadline. Then supervisory staff. The LCBO is in the on-deck circle with a weekend strike deadline, and doctors are next up after swearing off any job actions during a new round of negotiations.

It’s not so much pattern bargaining as pattern settling — a pattern corresponding to the election calendar as Premier Kathleen Wynne braces for the next campaign less than a year away. What price labour peace? Consider it the cost of politics — and economics.

The political calculus is that Wynne is making the most of rising revenues to bankroll the latest settlements. But there’s also an economic calculation at play, because those workers cashing in now are just catching up after being frozen out during recent years of budget deficits and austerity.

You feel it's ok to keep workers down with part time hours while the LCBO reaps in the profits.

Why does right wing ideology always hurt the little guy?

There are jobs that are mainly part time and so long as that is explained from the beginning {which I understand that is the case} then it is the employee who makes that choice. If they are looking for full time work, then go find a full time job at a company that hires mainly full-timers.

Now should part timers get to take holidays, of course. Should part timers have some benefits, sure. But I do not agree that a company holding more part time employees, as hold people down.

As for reaping the profits, that has nothing to do with employees. I am sorry. These employees are not being exploited so if the company wants to make millions and pay out min. wage only and hire part time only, then so be it. Don't like it, don't go there, don't work there.

I know quite a few who work at the LC, some full time, most part time and most are happy with their job. They know they will never be full time, and they knew that going in. They don't care. Benefits is the biggest complaint I have heard.

LCBO workplace the 'complete opposite' of Ontario's proposed labour laws, say employees - Toronto - CBC News

Sorry to disagree Jessica, but profits have everything to do with employees. Without a companies employees and their hard work, profits wouldn't soar, of course, for many other reasons a company does well too. And the best way a company can repay it's employees for great profits is by giving it's employees great benefits and hours that can provide them with sustainability. Nothing is harder than trying to live on a part time salary, or trying to find another job to supplement a part time job. Sometimes people have to take a job, not everyone gets to choose.
Lots of good reviews on glassdoor.ca and other sites for LCBO, so they have apparently some happy employees, but they've also a lot of unhappy ones too.

The whole profitable business/employee thing is a circle because without one you don't have the other. The agrument is the same with agencies. You hear it all the time. Without girls there is no agency but without the agency, those ladies are not working. Sure they can get work elsewhere but businessed can always find employees.

So no, I do not think the companies profits play. At least not the way it is being presented.

I am not saying it is not difficult to live off a part-time job, but you do have a choice in work. In this country, you do. You don't like PT hours at the LC, then go for FT at another place. Either by education for a better career or by trying getting a FT position in a retail store, at your local fast food joint. Although they are all the same too. No full time and only for senior workers. So why is the LC the only bad guy here in that regard?

Benefits is a different story. I think benefits should be given to both types PT and FT. So I agree there, and I don't see why Pt can not be structured. That would be helpful as well I agree.

However, the one thing that most are missing - the issue of FT work is the union's own fault. That is what they made it. They can't afford to give people more hours when the people with seniority have used up all the hours. That is what their union negotiated. So again, I don't see the LC as the big bad here.

Having said all that, I am currently anti LC and anti beer store, because I have been dealing with an alcoholic lately, so what do I know? LOL

PS - I was excited about the other thread you just started but I see that went away fast. Personally - I think you were on to something......

I see your points, especially when you bring up agencies and girls. That was always thrown at me when I ran agencies, that I'd never survive without them. Yet it was me who got them their business, and they who brought in repeat clients, the clients they'd didn't take that is, lol. But back to the lcbo....
It would be nice to hear an explanation as to why part time employees can't receive benefits.
Thanks for your response:)

Great debate on labor Jessica and Cristy. Both of you love ladies have made some great points.

Based on Wynn's new labor laws it would be quite an embarrassment if she doesn't address the issue although union contracts usually are the playbook regardless of the labor laws expect for health and safety of course.

Only explanation I have every heard, and that was before this possible strike, is basically "that is the way the union negotiated it" People who have been there for the longest get the FT hours available. How the LC determines the amount of FT and PT hours available, I have no clue.

But again part-timers would be in a better position if they had structured hours and benefits. That part I agree on. I saw they came to a tentative deal but only head the read the headline so I will look to see what they came up with. Hopefully those two were on the list.

I drove by the LCBO just 15 minutes ago and it was open :unknw:
