I would use a different tactic. Say, John I feel you are not happy for reasons I am not able to comprehend. Let's take some time away from each other and lets connect in a couple of weeks. Play it cool as if you don't need him as much as he think you do.

Yes you are giving him the easy way out if he wants to leave you or he will wake up and say no, sorry I have to much on my mind. But he must tell you the reasons he is acting like an asshole.

Either way you win cause you are the one that was upfront and won't deal with bullshit.
