VANCOUVER - The RCMP said Wednesday it plans to recommend assault charges against a minor hockey coach who tripped a 13-year-old player following a game last weekend, causing the child to break his wrist.

A hockey mom in the stands captured on video UBC Hornets coach Martin Tremblay tripping a Richmond Steel player during the post-game handshake, despite his team’s 5-4 victory Saturday at UBC’s Thunderbird Arena.

Video footage shows the coach shake hands with the goalie of the opposing team. He then appears to purposefully march down the line of Richmond Steel players before sticking out his right foot to the side and trip the youth, causing another player to also fall.

Tremblay then spins around, jabbing his finger toward the second player, who’d leapt back up to his feet to face the coach.

“We’re expecting to forward assault charge recommendations to Crown counsel, probably in the next month and a half,” RCMP Sgt. Paulena Gidda said. “The matter is still under investigation. There is still video to review. There are still statements to obtain from onlookers as well as parents that were at the arena.”

Tremblay was arrested after the incident and released same day, on a promise to appear for court date at the end of August, Gidda said.

As well as criminal charges he obviously needs to be banned from ever having any association with kids sports PLUS a hefty civil suit.

VANCOUVER — Mounties are recommending a charge of assault against a minor hockey coach who tripped a 13-year-old in the handshake line following a game Saturday, leaving the youth with a broken wrist.Martin Tremblay has been suspended from the Vancouver Minor Hockey Association as a result, Dion DeMarco of the VMHA told the Vancouver Province.

The suspension is pending a disciplinary hearing with Tremblay, who coached with the VMHA last season. It was his first year in the league, DeMarco said, but not his first year as a coach.

He inquired about coaching with the VMHA when his son was relegated to a different division of Vancouver Thunderbirds Minor Hockey Association, and all their coaching spots were filled.DeMarco said they were in need of a coach for their 11- to 12-year-old boys, and Tremblay cleared a criminal record check.Amateur video of Saturday's game shows Tremblay, coach of the Hornets in the UBC youth spring recreational league, tripping a 13-year-old player following a 5-4 win for his club during the exchange of handshakes with players on the Richmond Steel team following the game.

"He coached for us but when he was doing this, he was on his free time," DeMarco said. "This is a league run by the UBC and ultimately they're the ones responsible for him coaching at that incident."One parent of a Richmond Steel player, who did not want to be identified, said the incident started after the Steel player who was injured started to celebrate the opening goal."He was celebrating and he skated by the (opposing) bench and obviously, the coach said something to him because the player then turned around and gave him the finger," the parent said."Every time that kid was on the ice, you could see the coach would be talking to him, trash talking him, basically," added the parent.

"It was to the point where the kid was visibly upset on the bench."It was the final game of an eight-game regular season with playoffs in the three-team league, and the competition between the two teams was fierce.

The spring league isn't sanctioned by Hockey Canada and UBC spokesperson Lucie McNeil said the facility doesn't manage the coaches."We register the teams, we keep score, we hire the referee . . . but the teams are independent," McNeil said. "Our opinion is that by requiring the coaches to have minor hockey league experience for this kind of recreational league, up to this point we have felt it was sufficient due diligence.

"But Hockey Canada vice-president of hockey development Paul Carson said that requirement isn't enough to absolve the league organizers of responsibility."There's still a lot more that goes into creating a safe and positive environment for kids," Carson added.

"The private side of the game is very different."Carson declined to comment on the possibility of assault charges to Tremblay. DeMarco, however, was clear that the punishment needs to be firm."There has to be a strong message," DeMarco said. "You're the adult, you're the one who has to maintain your cool."I have three kids of my own, I don't want another adult touching my kid."

Regardless, words don't break wrists. There were other avenues he could have used instead of blindsiding a kid. Even worse, a second kid who was not involved also fell.

He's done, he'll never be coaching little people again but I really don't think it's a Police matter. I don't think the Police needs to be involved but I do believe he should be banned from ever coaching anyone under 18.

Madman , if only that were true. The association where I coached for years keeps forgiving coaches like this and giving them teams. Once I was in a position to charge a coach with abuse and didn't, I'll never make that mistake again.

This guy needs a wake up call. Keep in mind that these coaches are volunteers and so are the people who select the coaches. What happens is that the convener quits a new guy comes in the offenders reapply and get another team.

What age group were you coaching?.

When and at what age group or league do coaches start getting paid?.

The year the incident occurred the kids were 12. The coach had singled out 3 players after a game we lost and was yelling so harshly one of the boys started to cry. Later that year the parents all got together and wrote to league to complain, the league talked to him but he was given the team 3 more times over the next 5 years

I don't know about other areas but lots of GTHL AAA teams pay their coaches.

It probably has to do with a lack of knowledgeable volunteer coaches. I don't know much about the Hockey Leagues but I do know I've done a few volunteer soccer coaching stints and this was the case. They were begging us to coach, there was just not enough volunteers. I've seen some hot headed coaches, it happens in every league.

yet those hot headed coaches do not belong...geeeez they re just kids. I just think those weird hot tempered coaches cant hack it in the world, so they get their own ego trip by trashing young kids.
