TORONTO - Mayor Rob Ford blasted Toronto’s new ban on plastic bags Thursday as “the dumbest thing council has done.”
In an interview with radio host John Oakley on AM640, Ford came out swinging at councillors who voted Wednesday for a “ludicrous” ban on plastic bags starting Jan. 1, 2013.
“It’s the dumbest thing council has done and council has done some dumb things let me tell you,” Ford told Oakley the morning after the surprise vote to impose a plastic bag ban.
Ford stressed he doesn’t believe plastic bags can be banned.
“You have to have plastic bags, Johnny, you just can’t ban them,” he said.
"You’ve just got to take notes, the campaign has already started for the next election.
“We have to get rid of some of these councillors.”
Ford blamed residents for not being involved enough in municipal politics.
“It’s the people’s fault. Sometimes I get so frustrated because the people are just sitting back listening but they don’t pick up the phone, they don’t go down to City Hall, they don’t ask questions and they just, it’s frustrating,” he said.
The mayor predicted the ban will hurt taxpayers and the city’s economy.
“I just don’t see how this is beneficial to anybody living in the city.”
He also took aim at Councillor David Shiner — a member of his own executive committee — for moving the ban.
“I don’t know how he is going to explain to his constituents at election time that he banned all plastic bags, that’s going to be hard to explain,” Ford said. “I feel sorry for him.”
The mayor repeated his belief the city will be dragged to court over the ban.
“We’re going to get sued, Johnny, mark my words,” Ford told Oakley.
The only reason the plastic bag issue was before council was Ford himself moved to eliminate the five-cent bag fee brought in by his predecessor, David Miller.
“The only good thing from yesterday was we got rid of six cents — it’s five cents plus the HST — the six-cents bag tax, so I’m happy for that, so starting in July you don’t have to pay it,” Ford said.
Asked if the bag ban vote was meant to rub his nose in it, Ford acknowledged that could be at work.
“They might have taken a shot at me, that’s fine, I know I’m doing the right thing,” he said.
“We’re turning the city around. Call them for what they are, these NDPers are just used to the gravy train and the gravy train is over. So whenever they want to take a shot they can and if this is their way of taking a shot — banning plastic bags — it’s a pretty stupid shot.”
