Are the CSC and Provincial Correctional Institutions perfect? Absolutely not! Before throwing it onto the Correctional Officers that keep the public safe and keep the peace, take a good hard look at the law-makers (Federal and Provincial) politicians that always talk out of both sides of their two faces!
Let's discuss over-crowding and under-staffing which leads to the majority of issues behind locked doors. Growing through the ranks as I have, I will be the first to say that there is a lack of training; however, if these bleeding hearted far left baby-sitters want front line Correctional Officers to rehabilitate inmates; then, you all better fork out an abundance of tax dollars to hire double the amount of Correctional Officers at both government levels. The current ration standard is 1:30 throughout the country and higher in Ontario's detention institutions. Even doubling the amount of Officers will still have a ratio of 2:30 so don't count on too much rehabilitation happening.
All the catch-phrases and words changed in the mid-eighties to be or sound politically correct and/or attempt to demonstrate rehabilitation, but all the fancy words and such do not impact social misfits and social reptilians. We're not talking about men/women/youths that desire to be rehabilitated; there are only one element ahead of cro-magnon using the reptilian part of the brain that is fight/flight/kill/be-killed and take to survive; whereas, the rest of society has learned how to care and share for all to exist.
There is a huge difference between respect and being treated humanely!
RESPECT:
I have believed that a general respect is afforded everyone until it shouldn't be for whatever the reason. Criminals, inmates, parolees must earn respect and, in many situations, it can be gained and re-gained through a change of action, behaviour and course of life.
HUMANE TREATMENT:
Clean clothing, 3 meals, commissary, earn a modest stipend, shelter (heat, electricity, water), showers, access to dental/medical, access to legal aid and religious/cultural teachings.
How many inmates/criminally not responsible offenders and young offenders turn out to be million dollar babies as known in corrections? Answer too god-damn many! By the time 25 years goes by, all associated costs of trials, appeals, forensic testings, costs of housing, and payment of Officers and other employees in Corrections a majority of inmates will cost tax-payers over 1 million dollars each. They deserve respect for dealing drugs, making bombs, abusing, raping, killing, stalking, using guns/knifes, stealing or milking people out of their life savings.
I think not!
How many Canadians born or immigrants do not have or have adequate of the above? More than the population of all Federal/Provincial institutions.

The job specifications do not require post secondary education; however, it is rare that new hires do not have post secondary credentials. It is also a career/job that should only be held for 7 years, without lateral or upward movement and if one cannot move up the ranks throughout the system; they should seriously search for new employment. It's a poisonous environment at best that is because of the inmates, co-workers and politics. However many stay because of the paycheque and benefits and some are too lazy to realize they have burnt out.
24 years ago I began a career; the intent was 2 years. After 11 years, I moved through the ranks and moved to and from different institutions and I did that because working the front line becomes a factory job. The faces/names change but the crimes/sentences and stories do not. If I had a penny for every story told by inmates, I'd have more money that Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg combined.
There is a reason inmates are incarcerated and that's because they cannot function in a normal societal atmosphere and most of them do not want to either.
The correctional officers duty is:
1. Keep the general public safe.
2. Keep institutional employees safe.
3. Keep inmates and prisoners in check, not down or demean but in check.
Corrections is a para-militaristic operation.
If/when I interact with inmates, I say good morning, good afternoon, good evening and/or good night and I train all under me to do the same. Do I talk about personal situations theirs or mine-absolutely not; it's not in my job description and I have no use for social workers.

YEAH! These people and all other prisoners deserve the respect of the Corrections Officers and the even moreso the general public! It's not a right! Their basic human requirements to sustain life are facilitated and these bleeding hearts probably want my staff and I to play euchre with sub-humans.
Oh I mentioned double the staff with doubles your taxes, and if you really want CSC and Provincial Corrections to be more sensitive be prepared to shell out another double maybe triple those amounts to pay for staff training on a regular basis! Good Luck with that!
Ashley Smith's treatment was apprehensible in my opinion as CRT senior management, what those officers did was wrong, what orders given were wrong and they should be fired, all of them managers and officers. There are secure chairs, secure gurneys, secure jackets and other secure restraint options to use. Ashley was her own enemy though by constantly creating incidents.
Joe/Jane Q. Public is quick to crucify Military, Police and Correction Officers but let's face it, Joe/Jane Q. Public, you're happy that there are people like me that do these jobs to keep you safe. Do you really care what happens to the bottom feeding, dregs of society. If they don't like our prison systems try the mid-east, central-europe, asia or south america.
