The only people who are "offended" by the use are the ones acknowlegeing or putting the connotation onto people with disabilities or diminished capacity. Put it another way: call someone a moron, dummy, or whatever, to them, is "ok" because to them, it doesn't give specific reference to someone with a disability. I use the word 'tard all the time when someone says or does something stupid. To me, it is synonymous with moron.....

At ONE point, we used to call someone with mental issues "retarded" and that was the norm. Now in our PC world that has been replaced with diminished mental capacity or something like that. Just like the N word used to be used to describe black people....hell, the term "black people" used to be used to describe "african americans" or "african canadians"...even if they're not from africa......

BTW: that guy in the video doesn't look like a "retard", he looks like he has down's syndrome, a totally different affliction.....

Just like calling someone a cripple was the nom de guerre then it was physcially disabled and now i think it's "physically challenged".....

Tboy - you missed the point completely, because you want to use the word, not acknowledge the facts behind the offensive nature of the word and feel it is better to just dismiss it.

The word whore is a offensive word for a prostitute. Do you think that other women, who are not in this industry are not offended by the word as well? And also of course some women in this industry as well?

On a personal level, I think PC has gone way too far and many people are now using it as a platform to gain some type of upper hand. On a professional level and when speaking about the work place I advise all to not use any derogatory words or sexual innuendoes as they will come back to bite one on the ass.

There is usually an agenda behind most campaigns and issues get taken way too far. The governing parties or the want to be governing party will look at an issue and if they think it can get them votes go along with it and it usually creates mayhem for the general public who just want to live their lives without too much complications.

The N word in today's day and age. Does it really have the same horrible meaning? I mean have we not evolved quite a bit since the horrible days of slavery? I would never use it and am only using now for discussion purposes so no flames please. We do still have discrimination but it exists among every group. Most groups of people in some form discriminate against another group. I'm sorry but this little evil trait in my opinion is human nature.

I also have seen that when a person's back is up against the wall they will use whatever ammunition they can muster. If the race card, sexual harassment card, the age or sex card etc... can be used even though in prior discussion there was never any mention of it, IT WILL be used in the end. Is this right, ABSOLUTELY not but it is reality!

Comics, are we going to totally shut down stand up comedians. I know some have been slapped and some rightfully so as the incident with Kramer but making fun of different races has always been part of the show.

DO we now stop that now too because I'm sure someone in our vast population will be offended?

However the only way to help stop that is to narrow it down to a few of the worst words used with the most hurtful of content, and make those words wrong. So that when people do use them, others can identify better with just how wrong the person is when that person uses it.

You say that the reality is what it is and I agree as well. So in reality how do you stop the offensive people? In my mind, you can not so the next best thing is to try to go after and put a stop to the words that the offending party is using in their assault.

Agreed. I just refrain from calling anyone by name regarding, race, sexually preferences or physically challenged. I call them all "Friends".

No I do not think it is okay to call someone either, but I am not stupid {pun also intended} enough to believe that some words don't have more meaning and pack a bigger punch over others in the offensiveness category.

Again, I get what you are saying, but reality it what it is. Is it not better to take the most offensive word and ban it so at least something is done, instead of nothing at all???

Why does it have to be an all or nothing?
