RayFinkel upset about being called "Retard", Brings out lawyer for Lawsuit

When I was a kid in Montreal. my mother volunteered for The Retarded Children Society (that was the registered name of the charity) which basically raised money to aid what we now call "special kids". These terms are not quite the same as a racial, sexual preference or religious insult because this is a group that, in many ways, cannot defend themselves.

Times change and you have to be living in a cave not to change with them. This may be one of the few forums where the use of the old terms might be okay. We are an irreverant bunch. But who knows which HUBGFE member might have a special kid and be offended. When you can call someone something derogatory why not call him an asshole.

I must admit when I say the thread my immediate thought was that Esco was a grouchy old fart to be using old terms and that wasn't as funny as he used to be. :biggrin2:

This is not directed at anyone particular, but I think people need to lighten the fuck up and stop being offended at every little thing

And there goes the neighbourhood of debating in an intelligent way.....

LG is right, in saying that times have changed and the reasons for the change in language usage
is because of the sensitive nature of the terms used.......

So you are not just Dealing with one Word ....once you let one go by then you
open up a can of worms.....which is ok or not but you have to see that this has
been debated before....

What you say in private or pm is between two people....
But you are on a board with others.....so you really are in
the public.....

Sorry....guys...I find most of your joking funny ....Really
It is good that people speak up when they are offended by
this...and if it is offensive to a person then we should be sensitive
to it....Even if they don't care....but it is a public board....

I'm offended by your post

I resent the fact that some of you refer too me as WOP!

That limey bastard Madman is always calling me a WOP!

In all seriousness, among friends it's a joke and it's clowning around. Most of the boys will do it, it's part of the locker room. I would never call anyone I don't know on a friendly basis or I know is sensitive a name which includes their heritage, absolutely not.

if someone over hears me and a buddy clowning around and gets offended, especially if they are not of that particular race or demographic then I think it's their problem. It wasn't meant for them to hear and they shouldn't be listening in to begin with.

Hey Wop would you be annoyed if someone called you the Guinea Dago Guido that sucks spaghetti, chews meatballs, drives a camaro, wears too much polo and likes polyester clothing for the revival of disco?Hmmmmmm

I'm offended by your post

Sorry you are Offended Dear.....

I agree completely with Femme Fatale. No one should be subjected to jokes that diminish ones culture, race or religion. I do not approve of all lifestyles but I will never lower myself to use derogatory names.

Guido you should be more proud of your heritage than allow people to call you vulgar names! I'm sure most Italians would not be happy to hear the name calling being used in this thread.

you forgot "wears socks with sandals"....sheesh......

that's just it: no one was being insulted via their race religion mental illness etc....they were being insulted because they are/were stupid.

Like I've said: if the term was directed at someone like a 'special child' then yeah, it is a very derogatory word and shouldn't be used....but if I was calling a regular old bonehead "retarded" then, that's no worse than calling them an idiot, stupid or what have you.

Like the word nigga.....it is not derogartory when a black person is calling one of his buddies a nigga, but it is offensive if a white honky sumbitch like myself called a black person a nigga....it's ALL about how the word is used.

LG: sure, society evolves and what used to be common, now is "offensive". But is it ALWAYS offensive? No, only when directed at people with diminished mental capacity. Like that old charitable organization "crippled civilians"....or "handicapped parking".....sooner or later someone is going to realize the word handicapped is derogatory and fight to change the label to "those with physical disabilities are allowed to park here" spaces....then someone is going to get up in arms over the term "disabilities" and want to insert the word challenged....

Now let's get onto other physical ailments: blind people.....oh fuck, someone is going to go apeshit over "blind" and call them "visually impaired" then someone is going to get up in arms over "impaired" because they're not impaired, they are fucking blind.

Just like it is going to end up being "wrong" to describe bank robbery suspects by their race, height, sex, weight, age....sooner or later someone will rob a bank and the police radio will come out with "a human being robbed the bank at _____ and _____ be on the look out for them"......wtf?

I say we strive to outlaw ALL adjectives......because that is the ONLY way you won't offend someone.......

The old saying is you can't please everyone so why even try or something like that LOL. As long as it's not against the law and we still have some form of freedom of speech, let's not worry about it.

I wasn't offended just thought you were old and grouchy and not as funny as usual, lighten up old man:biggrin2:

I think that this is one of the few forums where you could get away with just about any derogatory term. Hey I'm not saying that some of the things most people deem offensive is logical, it isn't. Be that as it may it does change over the years and to put your blinders on and say it doesn't is just choosing to be ignorant for no good reason. Hell when I was a kid in Montreal we still used " eany , meany, miny, mo.....". You would be shocked if you heard kids using that to pick sides or see who batted first today.

The fact is that most people think the term retarded is offensive now.....live with it. I think its fine in a forum like this, just as calling Guido a wop or peace and Madmen fags is fine. Or the George Carlin stuff. That's not to say everything here is a "free pass". What isn't fine here, I'm sure, is something like calling someone a nigger. There are a few others. "Retarded" is somewhere in the middle in the hierarchy of offensiveness, but closer to the most offensive end.

Why? When did they start using the term " special" ? Probably in the early '70's ( so you are only 40 years behind the times on this one t). The first Special Olympics were held in 1968. Perhaps because it has been so long, special kids have now learned that it is a derogatory term directed towards them.

No one probably cares what terms you use up in the wilderness:biggrin2:, and I appreciate that you hate change but get with the times a little bit. I mean 40 years?

In conclusion :biggrin2:, it's fine here to use the term but don't assume that I will find it clever. Do expect me to think that you were born in the '50's.

Tell, who called me a happy person? I want names...NOW!!

LG, you remember playing playing hide and seek or Frozen tag? Picking the member with eeny meeny miny moe? I don't know why but I was always it, I was always the MOE! I think it was because I was the only Irish kid with reddish blonde hair. I was being discriminated against I'm sure of it!

eeny meeny miny moe was very racist when I grew up "catch a ......" it rhymed with tigger but wasn't tigger

You see Madman can understand the humour and defend himself which makes it inoffensive, although the only guy with a beard is top left in the Tommy Bahama shirt. Hey Madman is that hair on your head fom plugs taken from your pubic area?

I guess it all boils down to what is most important to the person saying some of these offensive words. You being able to call someone a retard or someone's feelings regarding it and possibly offending or upsetting people even if you are unaware. If you don't care about others people's feelings, then you don't.

Clearly there is a line drawn and people will choose to stand on whatever side they want.

Again the correct term is intellectually disabled and that can cover many disorders

3. Asperger Syndrome
4. Autism
5. Cri Du Chat
6. Down’s Syndrome
