RayFinkel upset about being called "Retard", Brings out lawyer for Lawsuit

Again, I get what you are saying, but reality it what it is. Is it not better to take the most offensive word and ban it so at least something is done, instead of nothing at all???

Why does it have to be an all or nothing?
Because justice is supposed to be blind. It cant be impartial towards one segment of society

But this is not about justice. This is not a criminal act. Justice is suppose to be blind, but society doesn't have to be.

Absolutely. Banning some is a good start :PEACE:

Actually, the way hate crime (especially hate-speech) legislation is going, calling someone names either already is illegal, or soon will be.

If I call a gay person a f_ggot in England I can be charged. Same with the N-word.
Not sure about Canada though, maybe a lawyer can answer that.

EDIT: its illegal in Canada also to some extent: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech_laws_in_Canada

WHEN used in the offensive. Yes.

I knew you would come back with hate crime laws.

There is no section under the criminal code that I know of that states I say the N word and I can be arrested. Again, it is not solely about the word. This is discussing a ban on the word. Not a criminal code violation. These words are often used in hate speech so I see the confusion but the Code forbids hate propaganda. The words have to be used in conjecture with a lot of factors to have a person charges under hate crime laws of hate-speech.

No I do not think it is okay to call someone either, but I am not stupid {pun also intended} enough to believe that some words don't have more meaning and pack a bigger punch over others in the offensiveness category.

that's just it, who is offended? you? the word doesn't apply to you in any way shape or form (in the sense that the pc's are trying to portray it as).

Take the N word for example. That is a prime example of how, you can use that term to describe your friends just fine.....as long as you are black. If whitey uses that word, prepare to have the city burned......

The point that I'm trying to make is ANY word can be offensive...if you're ready, willing and more than happy to be offended. For eg: a buddy of mine calls his gf and her girlfriends "bitches"....hey bitches, wuz happening? No one gets offended....but I bet you would be....yes or no?

I think words can only offensive when used to describe a person that it applies to in an offensive manner. For eg: calling a person with down's syndrome a retard. A person with a physical ailment a "gymp"....etc. When your buddy or co-worker does something stupid, calling him a dummy or retard is F I N E fine.

As esco says: if you're going to want to ban some words, might as well ban em all because with all the people around, you're sure to offend someone somewhere at some time........

Now how would you enforce the ban? You can't just say "this word is banned" and hope everyone will abide by it. There has to be some kind of punishment....I mean, it's bad enough when one breaks serious laws (like gun running) and only get a slap on the wrist.....

But more to the point: banning words is a step off a long and slippery slope. We have laws here giving us freedom of speech and when you start to impose laws impreding that freedom, then sooner or later, you're going to lose that right entirely. What's next? thought police? Hell, we already have someone arrested for THAT........(story about the cop who didn't actually start, or commence eating women).....

I disagree with you Tboy. Sorry but that is the way it is. I am not debating with you.

Language is fluid and dynamic and has changed and evolved since the beginning of vocal communication. Is it any surprise that terminology or social acceptance of certain terms, comes and goes out of fashion? Or is it the correction of your use of such terms that is irritating?
I do get the back and forth between Esco and Finkel and measure it in that context. But is it outside the realm of consideration to think others might see it as offensive?

Excellent points by tboy.

What the whole thing comes down to is people want to stop others from saying things that will offend them, but dont really care that much if they are doing the offending themselves. Or better yet, they will find an excuse why the insult they use is somehow less offensive (or not offensive at all).

Look at Piers Morgan, he was quick to attack Coulter for using the retard word, but apparently has no problem himself using words like imbecile, stupid or idiot. And he's also found a way in his own mind to perfectly justify those insults

No, it is not outside the realm of consideration but like I said, no matter what you say, you can be sure whatever it is might/will offend somebody.

Here's a good example: I worked with a tranny for about a year in a cabinet shop. I'd tell a joke that was determental to men, and they'd get offended. I'd tell a blond joke and they'd get offended. Least with a heterosexual person you can tell one or the other and get a laugh........

Just today I was talking politics with someone in the beer store, I said I wanted Romney to win, some dude next to us overheard me and he instantly got this "offended" look on his face.

Unfuckingreal. Get some thicker skin, people!!

Esco, you are very immature and insensitive to belittle me by using the word retard, you cock smoking FAGGOT!

I resent the fact that some of you refer too me as WOP!

That limey bastard Madman is always calling me a WOP!

In all seriousness, among friends it's a joke and it's clowning around. Most of the boys will do it, it's part of the locker room. I would never call anyone I don't know on a friendly basis or I know is sensitive a name which includes their heritage, absolutely not.

if someone over hears me and a buddy clowning around and gets offended, especially if they are not of that particular race or demographic then I think it's their problem. It wasn't meant for them to hear and they shouldn't be listening in to begin with.

Ray,

I have been around the boards longer than I care to admit. A few years back you were openly sharing your addiction issues with everyone who would listen on ****. You used your drug issues (crack cocaine addiction) as an excuse for everything vile that came out of your mouth. If I remember correctly, you are a fairly racist fellow.

I recognize Esco's handle, and assume this is the same person that used the board name on ****.

Just an observation, but is it not possible you brought this on yourself?

Err dude, thanks for supporting me. But me and him are not exactly being serious.

And yup, some of Ray's posts are racist and anti-semitic, but I'm part Jewish and I dont exactly take his jokes seriously
