Sheik said:The idea/mantra of the private sector is to make a profit. Without it there is no private sector. The public will only pay so much to the private sector unless its a product they are prepared to pay anything for.
Unskilled labour starts at minimum wage and goes up from there as experience grows. Private industry rewards the hardest working individuals whereas the unions make sure everyone makes the same no matter how hard or little they work. Aint fair to these hard working individuals IMHO.
Private sector is in business to make money, if they do it right and quickly it puts more money in their pockets. If they don't do it right, they have to go back and do it again and that gets expensive.
Sheik said:I am blaming it on Miller.... He put too many bike lanes in the wrong parts of the city IMHO.

This ^^^ A million times this ^^^Esquire said:To please a minority? The roads are for cars. Certain places can have the bike lanes. I get scared riding my bike on roads where cars zoom by close by, so I suppose I can empathize. Accidents can happen. I've seen them. But I'm a leisure rider, and avoid narrow or busy roads as best as possible. I prefer bike paths. I don't ride to commute per se.
This is North America. We have cars and public transit. This isn't some 3rd world country where people can't afford higher forms of transportation.
Miller declared war on cars because he's a big time tree hugger trying to force change on roads built in different times. I have no problems with dedicated bike lanes on newer, wider roads. But in some places, it's ridiculous to squeeze them in
Madman said:I don't know if you've walked through a Post Office, a government office, TTC installation in the last 3 years and spoke with any unionised people but the supervision has turned into harassment mainly due to the belief many have as of late which is little work for lots of pay. Workers are being timed as they go to the wash-room, being harassed when they call in sick etc....
Ask a postal or TTC employee what happens if he/she gets hurt, find out what hoops they have to jump through to collect WCB.
All contracts now are take away even companies that are thriving are jumping on the band wagon and playing take away because the public has bought into the rush to the bottom. The idea we need to compete with China and India for the manufacturing jobs which btw is impossible because we can't live in this country working for $2 an hour.
If an individual starts a company, treats his employees properly they will never want to vote a union in. The problem arises when the greed of the boss and his minions becomes abuse of the "unskilled labourers" which I have seen first hand happening on a regular basis with many outfits. I've also seen and spoken with great employers and I will always be the first one to shake their hands!
Madman said:Sorry about taking this thread off the bike track but....
Let's say you are a consultant under a 3 year contract working for a private sector company called Harper4U!
This contract clearly states
First year pay $95000.00 annually(we know consultants are over paid),
Second year $100,000.00
Third year $125,000.00 (I wonder who was the idiot manager that signed off on this deal)7
10 paid sick days annually and 4 weeks vacation for every year of the 3 year term.
Everything goes hunky dory the first year and a half.
New manager joins in now and realizes he could hire a consultant doing the same job for $85000.00 annually with no sick time and only 2 weeks paid holiday.
He convinces the owner and together they pull you into the office and tell you.
"John (yeah you see escorts that's why you're a john but they don't know that) we've decided we will no longer honour your contract. For the remaining year and a half you will be frozen at $100,000.00 even though we know we could find cheaper. You will also in your final year only receive 2 weeks paid vacation and 4 days sick days. Sorry John this is not negotiable it's a TAKE IT OF LEAVE kind of deal".
At this point both the new manager and boss stand up, turn around and walk away with their noses proudly held high in the air!
Sheik said:First off, I have friends that work for the TTC some of them hate their union brothers that are good for nothing morons. It's these good for nothing morons that have brought unwanted attention from the public and made their bosses clamp down on everything.
Government employees, yep know quite a few, same feelings. Post office, yup know a shitload there too including the infamous Original Kid Rock who tries to attend every major concert and party in town. Theres a lot of crap going on there as well, many of you are now experiencing late mail because some morons figured that its better to make those that work hard work harder and basically increased their workload. I've had many discussions with them about their situation and understand their grievances.
Bottom line is, the government has too many employees, unionized and non unionized. They need to get out of businesses that they should not be involved in, streamline the red tape and make it easier for people to get things done. Unfortunately the Liberal party believes in large government and the NDP in even larger government. We simply cannot afford it.
We could argue forever on these issues and never come to an agreement but I dont want to do that. I have my opinion and I can respect yours but not agree with it.

Coxwell said:Agreed! :good:
Put them on every arterial road, they will make both cycling and driving safer by keeping us separate.
Spending hundreds of thousands to remove new bike lanes doesn't make economic sense at all.
Consultation with the community was done when they were installed but there was nothing when they were removed, this is purely a spiteful gesture by Ford's people.
