To answer primo:
1) We kill bacteria so we don't get sick and die. That's reasonable. Tell me if peace is going to die because rocky gets into his garbage?
2) We build homes to shelter us from the elements, just like raccoons do. Was it wrong to displace the animals in the first place? Yes it was. So since we already did them wrong, does two wrongs make a right? no....
3)Why should we like all animals (which are leap years different than bacteria) not just "some"? Because mother nature was in balance before we came along and messed everything up. I take it that you have the attitude that we should create massive drift nets and take everything possible from the sea until there's nothing left. Kill off all wildlife that we don't like and then watch the eco system collapse.

Our society is TOO obsessed with pesticides, herbicides and killing off of natural habitats, and killing off of "pest" creatures. And as much as people love deer, there are people up here who look at them as nothing more than rats with long legs. Simply because they eat their precious flowers........

Now there are things that we can do to lessen the impact we have on natural habitats. That means NOT killing off a creature because it gets into our garbage, it means getting a rockey proof garbage can. It means prepping your house so squirrels and the like can't get in.

I have no problem with hunting limits to clear out the herd. We've messed up the eco system so bad that deer no longer have enough natural predators so we have to. For species that are dwindling or in danger, hunting should be banned.

What I DON'T coddle to is hunting for sport. If someone shoots an animal, and uses the meat, then that's understandable. When someone shoots an animal and cuts off its antlers and leaves it to rot, that's wrong on so many levels.

Think back to the days when the plains were covered by millions of buffalo and then they were hunted to near extinction. I think it was in the 70's where the only ones that were left were full of tuberculosis and close to the edge. Thankfully we woke up and now we have manageable herds. Anyone remember the scenes from "dances with wolves" where the starving natives saw acres of rotting carcasses stripped of their skin where they were dying for the meat? What a waste.....

+1. My old house bordered a cornfield, surrounded by woods. I used to see deer in and around the yard all the time. One morning I was up at sunrise, looked out to the field, and standing there was the most magnificent buck I had ever seen. Eight points, I think, it was amazing.

If it hadn't been hunting season, I would have told everyone I knew about it. But I knew if I said anything, the next day that field would be crawling with trophy-hunters, so I kept my mouth shut and hoped the buck would survive the season.

I'm with Primo and Peace. Would you allow rats and mice to populate your home or would you put out traps that SNAP their little necks off?

Varmints bring disease and bacteria. Pellet guns were invented to chase off varmints!

Umm raccoons don't spread the disease that rats and rodents do, different species dude....

Don't (as stated) mish mash this thread with BS about other species. This is about raccoons. As stated in the story they have as much right to be here as you do. If you don't like it, MOVE.

Or are you one of these hammerheads who think all animals should be killed off enmass just in case they might encounter you some day?

For the Bozos on here.

Years ago we had raccoons in our attic. Which precipitated going on the roof and repairing the entrance path they were using through the vent up there. A little hassle but no biggie.

Later they were going through our trash at night and making a general mess of everything. Once again a nuisance but easy rectified buy purchasing some animal proof garbage containers.

Never once did I consider buying a pellet gun or taking a shovel to them or their babies. Frankly why would I? I mean seriously the neighborhood cats used to use our garden as a litter box as well but I never considered hurting or maiming either. No mothballs solved that problem.

yes, which is why I said THE disease that rat's and rodents do, hantavirus, typhus, salmonella and meningitis among others..... which can be transmitted by indirect contact...you can't catch rabies via their poop etc. You might be able to catch rabies through their saliva but I would think it would have to be fresh for that to happen.....

It is my understanding that if a raccoon is found to have rabies, then steps are taken to contain the outbreak. I know there are groups who keep a close watch on the skunk and raccoon populations in urban areas.....(for this among other reasons).
 
Ok, so, other than rabies: 1) you have to actually eat the animal to get the disease, 2) you have to come into direct contact with their poo 2 - 4 weeks after gestation and another 3) humans also can carry and transmitt the disease.....

To avoid these diseases:
don't eat raccoons
if you clean up their poo, do it when it's fresh and for the last one, don't eat it.


So, you're right, are you advocating that we start an extinction protocol and wipe out the species? It certinaly sounds like that's what you're hinting at......

There is no more hugg-able varmint than the raccoon. We rescued and raised a baby as a "pet" when I was growing up. I use pet in quotations 'cause this is still a wild critter and I have no illusions to domesticated one. However, he roamed the house, would ask to go out, climb into our laps to be petted and would submit dutifully to being taken for walks on a leash. When taken into the woods without a leash, he would walk beside us and follow us back. They are amazingly curious, intelligent and clean with a luxuriously soft coat. We were able find a farm deep in the woods that took him on and he lived there comfortably for several years.

I believe raccoons, skunks and other rodents can be a nuisance in the city and in such close quarters to people are more of a health risk to young children and family pets.

We need a better wild animal control system that enables the homeowners to make a phone call and a professional comes out and safely removes the animal(s), then relocates them elsewhere at a very reasonable fee to the homeowner.
