For those dog lovers here that haven't had a run in with these vile creatures here's some tips you may find useful.
It shocked me to learn that what I thought was a skin tag on my dog was indeed a tick.I had never seen a tick before or had an experience with a dog having ticks. Apparently when they first attach themselves to your dog they'll feel like a scab,I missed that period.
Then they grow. The tick on my dog was there for probably 12 days or so, they can remain on a dog for 2 weeks, I even had my friend, a nurse, look at it in the beginning and she too thought it was a tag. It wasn't until it filled with blood did I realize it was something different.
Ticks will detach themselves if not removed by you when they are done feeding, to go and lay there eggs. They will lay eggs anywhere.
You can get a pill now that will protect your dog for 3 months and will kill any tick within 12 hrs.
if your dog has been bitten by a deer tick it is important to get him/her tested for lyme disease but there'll be a 4-6 week wait time after the bite before they can test.
Tests run about 56-60$ and if infected with Lyme will have to be put on antibiotics, also not terribly expensive-around 60$ or so. The vets will determine what type of tick it is if you take it to them. Not all ticks carry lyme disease.
