A Roebuck man - less than two hours into his 19th birthday - entered the Waffle House on Chesnee Highway with a gun and attempted to rob the restaurant before a customer fired his weapon, killing the teen, authorities said Saturday.

Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies responded to the Waffle House at 2230 Chesnee Highway just before 1:15 a.m. Saturday. Two masked men had entered the restaurant with the intention of robbing it, and at least one of them was armed, authorities said.

A customer, who is a concealed weapons permit holder, thwarted the robbery by pulling his gun and attempting to hold the men until deputies arrived. When one of the men pointed his gun at the customer, the patron fired, killing the teenager.

The teenager, later identified as Dante Lamont Williams, of 827 S. Edisto River Drive, Roebuck, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a written statement from Coroner Rusty Clevenger. Williams had been shot in the head and chest.

Sheriff Chuck Wright said he does not plan to charge the customer, who he says is “very upset” about the shooting.

During a news conference Saturday night, Wright said even after the masked men entered the restaurant, the concealed weapons holder waited until the robbers began ordering customers to the floor and employees into the back - while waving a gun - to act. After pulling his .45-caliber Glock, the customer ordered the men to stay put until deputies arrived. Only after Williams pointed his Hi-Point 9mm at the man, did the customer fire, Wright said.

“The way you get shot by a concealed weapons permit holder is you point a gun at him,” the sheriff said.

I thought having a gun licence is only good if you keep it at home. So all those that have permits can carry it with them and can act like Paul Kersey?.

Would he had shot if the punk was white?.

Colour has absolutely nothing to do with it dude.

Personally if anybody draws down on me I would shoot them in a nano second.

And it would not bother me one iota I can guarantee you that.

the question that comes to mind in this situation, when you ponder using a gun for defense is, can you discharge your weapon and minimize collateral damage?

Seems to me the answer here was yes.

He was justified in the use of deadly force.

If you question that, all you need do is ask the other people in that Waffle House at the time.

Definitely what I consider a good kill. Sad to say but some people are evil and a weeding out is necessary.

Anyone with a gun trying to hold a joint up is fair game in my book. White, red, green, or brown.

On second thought why are you even asking the question?
Obviously the guy is a criminal. What defense would he have put up "You shouldn't shoot me because I am a minority." ????
Seeing how the shooter WASN'T identified how are you sure that it wasn't a gentleman of colour who shot him?

Ok, there are many types of permits, carry, conceal, and own. In some states, you don't have to have a special permit to carry one as long as it is in plain site (florida) and in others, you have to have a special permit to carry one concealed.

As for whether he should have shot, no doubt about it. If he had simply jumped up blasting away, I'd say no but he drew down on the criminals, ordered them to stop, one turned his gone on him and died because of it. I have zero problem with that.

The kid that died decided his fate the second he got hold of the gun, and when he decided to use it during the commission of a crime.

If it were me at the Waffle House ( how cliche is that btw) I'm not sure I would want anyone firing weapons at anyone. Once shooting starts you have no control as to where they go unless you are the only one doing the firing. What if the guy who died hadn't died right away and managed to empty his gun?

Think I'd prefer to lose my wallet than have bullets flying around. Who carries enough cash to worry about into a Waffle House anyway?

Yes its a good kill in the instant that the perp took aim on him but the vigilante racheted up the risk substantially to everyone else inside by forcing the issue.
