Great picture. You really captured the moment.

I don't think I have met anyone who has rescue animals that was anything less than wonderful people.

yeah, I was thinking about getting a dog and no way would I go to a breeder, there are lots of good ones in the pound.....

Although, and I totally understand his reasoning, but if the dog is in that much pain, wouldn't it be better to end his sufferring?

Just saying......

I love my animals...The trust between the dog and owner is wonderful....
Such love....Thanks MB...

Awesome picture, what kind of camera do you have.

I didn't take the pic.

I saw it on the net with the caption underneath and just copied and pasted.

The bond between them just struck a chord and I thought I would share it with the members here.

Sometimes the truest statement of love is when you use the needle.

Do you think he ever didi this.

Animal shelters

Animal shelters

I can across this on another site and thought to share it with my HUBGFE friends.

Do you want an honest answer, or are you looking for an arbitrary placeholder for all the blame?

If you want a real answer, it is people like myself. I'm an honor's graduate with a B.S. in Biology, and when I'm not at work you can find me studying for the GRE and prepping my application to Texas A&M's DVM program.

I've spent the last year and a half pushing for a veterinary position at my shelter, so that I can return where I feel I would be needed most.

On a daily basis, we clean up after the animals, feed them, take their pictures, vaccinate, medicate, socialize, etc. For every cute puppy or kitten we adopt out, we usually find ourselves getting two in return.

Whether its a stray off the streets, or some heartless chode that decided their dog of 5+ years doesn't "fit" with their lifestyle anymore. No matter how hard we try, we grow attached. To some, we attach more than others.

Euthanasia is a necessary evil. Space isn't limitless, and even if it was, who would pay for all of the animals? I'm just sure our fellow Texans are salivating at the thought of increased taxes, especially for taking care of feral cats and breeds that have been labelled violent by a very ignorant public (i.e. pit-bulls).

It doesn't matter how hard you steel yourself, or how long you've been doing the job. You never get used to it, and you never grow completely numb. Imagine getting 12 cats in the span of a single day, and having to pick the 12 that have to die so there is enough room to accommodate them. I've stopped eating for days. I've cried myself to sleep. I've grown very disgusted with my fellow man.

Now on top of all that, imagine doing the job and running into disdainful assholes every single day. People that scoff at your profession as if it's nothing more than playing dog-catcher. Well-wishers that stand on pedestals moaning about how cruel it all is, but offering nothing more than hot air when it comes to real answers to a very real problem.

My personal favorites are the "animal lovers" that fall over themselves to rescue the yorkshire terriers and miniature pinschers that occasionally trickle into the shelter, but never seem to notice the 2+ year old mutt in the adjacent cage that is just as sweet, if not more so than the other dog that has a crowd of willing adopters and a guaranteed ticket out the door.

That reminds me, let us not forget about the pool of dimwits that only support no-kill shelters, and continually ask why the municipal shelter you work at isn't no-kill as if it were as simple as flipping a fucking switch.

(Protip: It's easy to label yourself no-kill when you can pick and choose what comes in, and shut your doors on a whim)

Educated, tired, but steadfastly devoted people very tired of that question.

Thanks for the eye opener post Beef. I was going to type your initials BJ, but that didn't look too good.

Did you know that there is actually a "Newfie Rescue"????

I'm thinking of getting one.

I know its hard I use to volunteer on the board at the humane society and helped create the cat enrichment program there.

Some thoughts, positive and negative, keep an open mind.

From the age of four, I grew up with dogs, large dogs, aggressive dogs that had been retired from police, search and rescue and seeing eye dogs, there were 7 in 20 years come through my home, and we loved each and every one of them. As a four year old, my parents asked me if I wanted a dog (most four year olds say yes to everything) I was no different but I wanted Scoobie doo, Snoopy or Benji. We had a neighbour 2 streets over that was a canine cop and he told my dad had the program worked to retire service dogs for all aspects of service.

A month later, Zeus was ours. He was a large, strong German Shepherd retired police canine that came fully trained, house-broken, that had to learn he was retired and it was his time to just be loved. We had a King, Kane, Hercules and Laney come through our doors all stayed with us until it was time for them to be put down about 4 years each before their health deteriorates badly.

The last one was really special. She saved my mother by hitting the lifecall button and barking like mad until Police, fire and ambulance arrived as my mother had a stroke and was alone.

Now, I have dog, Payton after Walter Payton-RIP- the greatest running back off all time. Too bad he didn't play for the cowboys.
I purchaased Payton through kijiji a registered breeder but breeder all the same. I wanted a puppy and a small dog and I got it! Shitzu, Maltese, Spaniel mix. He loves playing with all the big dogs in the neighbourhood. Athough I got him from a breeder, he's healthy, well behaved, makes me laugh daily and often and I think that I saved him from a possible SPCA situation.

I have read/heard that mutts are the best dogs, easy to train, less major health issues and I know someone that adopted two boxers from hurricane katrina.

It doesn't matter the type of pet, just take care of them.

The original author's heartfelt writings is the reason I could never work in a shelter, I'd want to take em all home....but I am also a realist: I know that animals have to be put down daily....by the thousands unfortunately.

Yes, it is our fault....it rests completely on the shoulders of irresponsible pet owners. I'll cite you a perfect example:

When I got my new place, a little black cat started hanging around. He was a great friendly little guy. I thought he was a runaway or a stray.....I let him in and he'd ask to go back out after an hour or so. So I didn't get fleas I put a flea collar on him. I called the local shelter and they told me quite often up here, we have "community cats" where they travel from house to house on a route and get fed and loved at each one.

Well......He comes around a few days after I put the flea collar on him and it has a slip of paper with a phone number on it. So I look up the number on canada411 and it's a dumpy house on the road leading to my place. So I plop him into my truck and drive him over......well, she lays into me about keeping HER cat and not letting him out, lays into me about putting a green leather collar on him and how she had a cat that hung himself when he jumped off the porch blah blah blah blah....I finally said listen: i don't keep him inside, I didn't put anything on him other than the flea collar and if you're so concerned about him, keep him the fuck inside and away from my place.....

everytime he came by my place I'd drive him back.....

Then I was bringing him back one day and she said "he's started spraying, do you want him"? What do you mean do I want him? He's your cat....No, I'm putting him out and not letting him back in.....and not putting out food for him....fucking cocksucker bitch....how can you just say that?

But then again, she lets her dogs run anywhere they want and (little runt fuckers) I've had to slam on my brakes any number of times because they've run out in front of me....

I almost feel like she should be charged with animal abandonment......

BTW: I'd take him in permanantly but he is aggressive towards my cat, and yes he sprays and I really can't afford to keep him....the vet bills for my own cat and killing me, can't afford two...but I do make sure he's fed........

I live in a condo and would never take a pet. I don't think it's fair for the animal because I'm rarely home.

The shelters have to put down the animals to control the population. It happens naturally in the wild as the predators hunt. The problem is we humanize our animals but natures way is to put down in the way of predator hunting for food.
