I'm totally crazy about dogs and my dog in general.

My mother came to visit and she was floored that I let my dog sit on my lap, which under "normal circumstances" would mean a small dog but in my case means a 115 pound land shark.
She said I was stupid about my dog and I pointed out that my dog is more loyal than any woman I know.

Then I told her that thing above about locking your dog or your girlfriend in a trunk for an hour.

She thinks I'm nuts.

LMAO.

But we all know that you are nuts.

So I've been mulling over the food issue since Kyra told me about the Innova problem, and I've also been pondering Rocky's skin issues. A couple days ago I was talking to a neighbor about wanting to change his food to something that maybe would help his skin, and he said he had put his dog on a raw food diet three months ago and it had made a big improvement in her skin and coat. I asked, isn't it messy? thinking about what A1 had said about fish heads and chicken parts. He said no, you can buy it prepared and frozen and just thaw it out as needed.

I couldn't get to the doggy health-food store fast enough. Once there I had to decide between beef, chicken, duck, venison, bison or lamb. I thought lamb would be best because that's what they always recommend for allergy-type issues, but I had no idea if Rocky would like it...he's very fussy about food. I bought a small bag and came home really not knowing what to expect when I gave it to him.

I shouldn't have worried. He loved it! Like he hadn't eaten for a week. Kept going back and licking the empty bowl. Today I was thinking about his teeth and thought it would be best to split his diet, half kibble and half soft. Back to the store, bought a small bag of the same brand of kibble...again came home not sure if he would like it. Again, shouldn't have worried, he wolfed it down and wanted more.

Here is a link to the brand I settled on, in case anyone else is interested in the raw-food diet but not interested in fish heads and chicken parts.

Thanks for the link SG.

Dog travels 500 miles trying to get home

Published: Sept. 3, 2012 at 5:23 PM

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- A North Carolina dog, left at a farm in Virginia, traveled more than 500 miles on its own to try to make it home, his owner said.
Mark Wessells had taken his black Labrador to visit his father at a farm in Winchester, Va., thinking to leave Buck there while he was in the process of moving, The (Myrtle Beach) Sun News reported. Wessells said he couldn't take care of the dog temporarily.
"I wanted him to be up in Virginia where my dad has all this other property and he would've been happy," he told the newspaper. But a week later, Wessels' father called to say Buck was gone.
"We thought somebody stole him because that was the only thing we could think of," Wessells said. "For the longest time, my dad and brother had been keeping an eye out for him, but never saw him."
About six months later Brett Gallagher found Buck in Bellegrove, a Carolina Forest, S.C., subdivision, about two weeks ago, not far from Myrtle Beach. When he got a chance he took the dog to an animal hospital where Buck's microchip identifying the dog and his owner was found.
"The nurse came back and said, 'Are you Buck?' and he got so excited," Gallagher told the newspaper. "It must have been the first time he heard his name since he left."
The newspaper said when Buck and Wessells were reunited at the hospital, the dog showered him with kisses.

Loyal pooch sleeps on his master's grave for six years straight

This German shepherd wins our Most Loyal Dog of the Decade (and maybe ever) award. When Miguel Guzmán died in 2006, his pooch Capitán disappeared while the family attended the funeral. A week later, relatives visiting the Argentinian cemetery were astounded to find the dog crying by his owner's grave. Thing is, no one had ever taken Capitán to the cemetery. "It's a mystery how he managed to find the place," said Guzmán's widow. The cemetery's director says that Capitán lies down on the grave each night by 6 p.m. — just as he has every night for the past six years.

Dog tracks down ailing owner at hospital

MYFOXNY.COM -Zander, a husky, was so upset when his owner was hospitalized that the pooch tracked him down and paid him a visit.
John Dolan was hospitalized with a skin condition last week. His wife says their dog Zander took it hard. She says the dog sulked and even cried.

Then Zander, seemingly decided he had to be by his owner's bedside. Zander broke out of the Bay Shore home and made his way to the Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center more than 2 miles away.

The four-legged friend likely went under the Robert Moses Parkway and across a busy four-lane road to get there. A hospital employee found the dog on the street outside of building where Dolan was being treated.

The Dolans got the 7-year-old husky from a shelter and nursed him back from starvation five years ago. Dolan says the dog has been like a son ever since.

The couple believes Zander traced John's scent to the hospital. A few days later Zander tried a second visit. He was found on his walk there.

The Dolans say this proves shelter dogs can be fantastic dogs and care for their owners as well as the owners care for the dogs.
