Owners of dog left in hot SUV return hours later

Fucken brainless human beings.

The owners of a dog left inside an SUV during Toronto's first heat wave of the year returned to their vehicle shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, about five hours after concerned people began calling police about the pet.

The couple didn't speak and appeared stunned as they were met by reporters at their SUV in the parking lot of the Queens Quay Loblaws. They didn't know that their dog had earlier been rescued from the Gardiner Expressway after it was freed from their locked car and broke away from its leash.

Toronto police Const. Matt Butt followed the dog onto the Gardiner and leashed the dog again. He did not use a collar, instead slipping the leash around the dog’s neck “like a noose.”

“Being a K9 guy, dogs are like my partner. I wanted to do everything I could to make sure he got home safe,” he said.

The dramatic rescue unfolded after several concerned people phoned police about a dog locked in an SUV at the Queens Quay Loblaws shortly after noon on Thursday.

All the windows of the SUV were partially open. However, the city was in the midst of a heat wave. Barbara Steinhoff of the Toronto Humane Society explained that dogs can only tolerate extreme temperatures for a matter of minutes. Dogs, unlike humans, don’t sweat, she said.

Firefighters were able to open the car door and put a leash on the dog around 1 p.m. As the rescue crews brought a bucket of water toward the dog, it rolled, slipping off its collar and leash.

The dog then wandered up the Jarvis Street to the Gardiner, where it roamed for several minutes, bringing traffic to a halt.

“The dog is now safe in the back of a police car,” Const. Wendy Drummond said.

Police aren’t sure if the dog sustained any injuries. It has been taken to the humane society to be examined.

“Don’t put your animals in a vehicle. We’ve had 152 animal complaint calls this year so far and officers had to attend 61 of those,” Drummond said.

“It takes our officers away from other emergencies.”

Parker the dog is safe after he was rescued from a hot car in a parking lot, only to escape and run the wrong way up a Gardiner Expressway off-ramp.
Two people called police — one at 12:16, one at 12:22 — concerned about the black, 100-pound pit-bull mix in the back seat of an SUV in the extreme heat.
Officers from a nearby plainclothes unit quickly responded. One reported back to police: “It’s really hot in there, the dog is looking pretty slow.”

Traffic Services officers soon arrived on scene, followed by an officer in the Police Dog Services unit. Officers got the doors of the vehicle open, and spent several minutes trying to coax the animal out of the car.
They eventually slipped a leash around its neck, and got it out of the vehicle.

“I had him,” said Const. Matt Butt, a canine officer. “But his collar was too big. I had my leash on him, we opened the door, and then he got agitated, flipped around on his back, the leash came off, and that was it.”
The dog then ran north through the parking lot, towards Jarvis St, and went up the Jarvis off-ramp and onto the eastbound Gardiner Expressway, with officers close behind.
“It was touch and go, some of those cars are moving up there,” Butt said.

But Parker was soon exhausted, Butt said, and lay down and took shelter in the shade of a car that had stopped on the shoulder.
The entire chase lasted eight minutes.
The driver of the vehicle joined police in comforting and stroking the dog on the highway, which was brought to a temporary standstill.
Parker was initially taken into the custody of Toronto Animal Services, and is now with the Ontario SPCA.

“We just heard from the SPCA,” said Toronto Police Sgt. Mike Hayles. “The dog is in decent health. They are sending the dog to a vet for a complete physical assessment, just to make sure there are no underlying medical conditions. But as far as we're aware at this time, the dog is OK.”
Const. Wendy Drummond said the owner could be criminally charged.

A man and woman, who appeared to be in their 20s, returned to their vehicle shortly after 5 p.m., but refused to speak to reporters.
Police have received 152 complaints about animals in distress since June 16. Sixty-one of those calls were deemed serious enough to dispatch police and fire crews.
“This is taking our resources away from legitimate life or death events… Please do not leave your animals locked in vehicles in this type of heat,” said Drummond

This is an example of a good cop. Makes Bosco proud.

After all the media exposure lately there are still stupid enough people to leave their dogs in the car.

However you look at it. It is sad for the dog. Imagine you being locked up in a car like that, windows open or not.

Don't know what to say anymore. Animals should have owners that care about them. My sister told me once that it's as hard to raise a dog as is to raid a kid, the responsibilities are enormous..

''This 19 year old Shep being cradled in his father's arms last night in Lake Superior. Shep falls asleep every night when he is carried into the lake. The buoyancy of the water soothes his arthritic bones. Lake Superior is very warm right now, so the temp of the water is perfect.
I was so happy I got to capture this moment for John. By the way, John rescued Shep as an 8 month old puppy, and he's been by his side through many adventures''

Nice one Bosco. Surprised the dog lasted this long. At 19 he will be gone soon and the owner is enjoying great last moments.

Great picture, really says a lot about the man's character!

Great picture. You really captured the moment.

I don't think I have met anyone who has rescue animals that was anything less than wonderful people.
