Driverless snowmobile hurtles down west coast highway for 12 kilometres

Police say it’s quite fortunate no one was hurt by a runaway snowmobile on the Trans-Canada Highway Monday afternoon.

The purple Arctic Cat Puma was sent hurtling down the highway all on its own after the throttle got stuck and its operator lost control as he attempted to cross the highway near St. Jude’s just west of Deer Lake.

The out-of-control machine bounced its way off the snowbanks, crossing the highway along the way, for around 12 kilometres.

About 10 kilometres into its perilous, westward journey, a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary police force in Corner Brook tried to stop the snowmobile with an unmarked car, but the stubborn machine bounced off it and kept on going. The snowmobile finally stopped near Pasadena after it hit a snowbank, became airborne and landed on its bonnet.

“The snowbanks are high and very hard all the way along, and it just keep falling back down toward the road and continuing along,” said Cpl. Dean Hyde of the Deer Lake detachment of the RCMP.

Hyde, who called the freak incident one-in-a-million, estimated the machine’s speed to have been at around 50 or 60 kilometres per hour.

Baby abandoned at end of London, Ont., driveway

A baby was found abandoned at the end of a driveway in London, Ont., early this morning.

London police said a citizen found the baby in a car seat at the end of a driveway on Emery Street East around 5:40 a.m.

The baby was taken to hospital, where "he was cleared medically," police said. "His extremities were cool or cold, but he was fine medically," said Const. Ken Steeves, the media officer for London police.

Anthony Franze, who made the discovery, said there was frost on the baby's teeth when he picked him up.

As awful as this sounds, my bet is the kid has a much better chance at life without the people who abandoned it.

Mounties stop speeding pickup with 17 people aboard

RCMP in Prince Albert, Sask., say they've never seen anything like it — a speeding pickup truck was pulled over Tuesday with 17 people aboard. "It's hard to believe what you're seeing, that anyone would take that kind of risk," Staff Sgt. Stéphane Caron said. "They were piled on top of each other … very unsafe situation."

An investigation is underway and charges are pending following the incident on Highway 2, about seven kilometres north of Prince Albert. At around 3:18 p.m. CST, police clocked a vehicle going 136 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. Officers were astonished by what they saw when they pulled the truck over.

In the extended cab of the truck, which includes a front and back seat, there were 14 people — three adults, 10 younger children and one teenager. Three other children were in the box of the truck, police said, hiding under blankets. The ages of the children range from 10 months to 14 years.

Police seized the vehicle and brought in three taxis and a tow truck to take the occupants to their destination. The truck will be impounded for 30 days, police said. Caron said he's never seen anything this extreme, but it's not clear yet what charges the driver might face. "Because it is such a marked departure from what we normally see, we are in consultation with the Crown," he said. "This is not your normal traffic ticket."

The science building was destroyed, and Mount Hermon lost the football game, ending a two-year-long winning streak.

Give him points for doing the right thing.

Rehab and a suspended sentence for him, if there is justice.

Canada's youngest secret agent :-Cool/"

When six-year-old Jacob St. Jean found out that secret agents weren't just the stuff of stories, he asked his mom, Erin, to help him track down some real spies. The pair wrote a letter to CSIS, asking if Canada's spy agency would set up a club for kids.

For four months, Jacob checked the mail daily, only to be disappointed. "I would say, 'You know, they're spies, they're busy with important business,'" Erin told CBC News. Then, earlier this week, Jacob received a mysterious package in the mail — and an apology for the delayed response — from the B.C. regional director of CSIS.

The reason it had taken CSIS authorities so long to get in touch, the letter explained, was that at first they had written to Jacob in invisible ink, but lost the piece of paper. The next version had been written in code, but they realized Jacob had yet to be trained in how to decipher. "So they finally got [around] to writing a letter in plain English and mailing it off to us," Erin said.

The letter included some tips for Jacob on how to become a spy — to be honest, loyal, smart and to listen to his parents. And the package included everything Jacob needed to become a junior secret agent: a cap with a CSIS patch, a CSIS pin and a CSIS medallion etched with his own, unique number.

"There's a code on it," Jacob says. "Special for me ... I don't think I should tell it."

'Cat litter mix' closed US nuclear waste repository

A mixture that included organic cat litter forced the closure of the only underground nuclear waste repository in the US, a team of government experts has determined.

The investigation was launched after low-level radioactive material was released in February 2014. It found an incompatible combination of nitrate salts and cat litter caused a breach in a container of waste. The cat litter was used to absorb moisture in the waste.

More than 20 workers at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico were contaminated and the release forced the repository to close indefinitely. Investigators believe that a thermal reaction inside the container forced the lid to pop.

Federal officials have said it could take years and more than $0.5bn to fully reopen the plant. "We are reviewing the report and its findings now as we continue working to mitigate the risks of this happening again," the Energy Department said in a statement issued on Thursday.
