Wouldn't the Nordic model be similar to what we have in the states...does it just focus more on the "john" rather than the providers?
Does it really matter either way. Criminalization isn't going to make people just stop doing the activity and go get jobs in other industries. The war on drugs hasn't stopped people from doing drugs, it just makes them be more sneaky which leads to some people using violence to do their drug dealing.
Whether it's the christian right or the liberal left, both sides want to control us in one manner or another. This is why I've been so adamant about smoking bans! I caught shit when I posted the modified lines about "they came for my neighbor, and I said nothing....they came for me and there was nobody left to speak up for me".
Look again at the things you support your government getting involved in...
- Right to health care/National Health Care...you are saying that the government knows best for each of us, and you, what is best for your health. They can decide to prioritize treatments for some and not for others. They can decide what you should eat, drink, etc. A recent report said that obesity is costing more to health care than smoking. Should obesity be banned? Stop thinking of health care as a right of each person and consider that some people make bad choices and should have to live with them.
- Affirmative action, pay equality, minimum wages, etc. Can you honestly tell me that everyone deserves a certain amount of money for a job done? Would increasing the minimum wage to $100k/year actually change anything? Prices would change to match the costs of labor and production and then we would have people asking for the minimum wage to be raised to $200K/year. Face facts, everyone is different and can produce differently. In some cases people choose to do jobs that require the barest amount of effort and skill. Anyone can do those jobs and so they don't pay very well. Some jobs require years of training and skill and intelligence, very few people can do those jobs and so they can "write their own ticket" so to speak. Some people risk their wealth to build up a business from scratch, what right do workers have to that wealth...None. The workers will get paid according to the demand for the jobs they can do and the work they produce. Forcing employers to hire people because of their gender, race, religion, etc. is just as bad as an employer who doesn't hire people based on those criteria. Employees should be hired and paid and promoted on individual merit.
- Gun control....even though we here in the US are supposed to have the right to bear arms, places in this country are trying to make it completely impossible to do so. The reason that right was written into the constitution is that history shows that when the populace is armed, it can fight back against a tyrannical government that breaks it's own rules. Look at what has happened in places where the people aren't allowed the means to protect themselves....eventually, a group or individual takes over the government and the people have no way of defending themselves. Whether you agree with the Bundy Wrancher guy or not, you saw what happened there. A government agency came in heavily armed over a tax issue. This guy wasn't building bombs...he was grazing his cattle. There are plenty of people out there who owe more in taxes but they don't all have paramilitary government troops coming to arrest them or take their property. On a smaller scale, the criminals and nutjobs that ignore gun control laws anyway, have a free path to cause as much damage as they want because none of the good/law abiding citizens are in a position to stop them.
The list goes on and on.
Once again, where are the people that think government control over smoking activities is a good thing but government control over pay for play isn't a good thing. Seems pretty hypocritical to me.
