Made with Love

Hear that.

C'mon....the amendment protecting the right to bear arms was originally intended to prevent an invasion by the British over 200 years ago!* That's liking saying laws about going faster than 5mph in a vehicle should still be enforced. Americans are in love with their right to do whatever the hell they want, and flaunt it worldwide. As I was told when I taught University in the US, "Thar's only two kinda folks in the world: us and them. We don't like them."

*'Course we won't mention the fact that the "right to bear arms" resulted in the US getting its butt kicked by Canada in 1812. On record, I believe that's the last war the Americans officially lost. The rest were "police actions".

Not true!

I like you guys very much...wait, are you us...or are you them?

Consider the scenario of a home invasion. If you have a gun, you have a pretty good chance of defending yourself. Take away that gun and you're at the mercy of the intruder. I'd say that taking guns away from people can lead to lot's of situations where the law abiding citizen is punished...you're taking away their ability to defend themselves.

I guess this is what I am confused about Prim0. Who has said guns are being taken away from sane, law abiding citizens? There is nothing the government has put forth that indicates that this will happen. I still want to know what is the real (not imagined) "punishment" that is to be wrought upon the law abiding citizen. No one is taking firearms away, you can still purchase firearms. What is the "punishment" that is the constant threat against John Q public.

A couple of point of clarification.
1st. I'm talking from a Canadian point of view. So there is no Amendment that protects our rights to possess firearms. Instead we have increasing pressure from (usually) the left side of the political fence to take away firearms and control them. They use arguments such as legit firearm owners having them stolen and used in a crime. However, the statistics show the vast majority of guns on the street used in crimes in Canada come from the states in the drug trade.

2nd. In Canada, if someone invades my home I am better clubbing him to death with the butt of my rifle than using it on him. In fact if I use any of my firearms in "the defence of my property" ie home invasion (or technically even if I fear for my life) I'm likely going to jail. Better to run for the phone than to the gun safe.

3rd. as was stated in another topic, someone intent on harming someone else is going to use whatever is available. That includes firearms, crossbows, knifes, hammers, barrels of fertilizer and fuel, you name it. Hell we were killing each other with rocks for bananas before we figured out gun powder. My point is this. Punish the offender. We don't ban hammers because someone "might" do something bad with them. Why treat firearms differently? "Because they are designed to kill". I disagree. Yes, their invented use may have been that, but thousands of people enjoy sport shooting which is a contest of skill, not practicing killing.

I just think that everytime there is a shooting death the media drags out the gun control/ban agenda, but if someone is bludgeoned or stabbed or killed with an ice pick and dismembered they talk about the crime and not the means behind it.
I agree with you...... treat is fairly and without prejudice. Commit a crime= go to jail. And as far as many gun owners are concered, send them to jail for a very long time.
