In truth, Christmas is not a religious event for me for many, many reasons, so I treat it as a special day to bestow happiness to others. I've spent Christmas at the hospital relieving those with families, working at shelters, in foreign countries volunteering my skills, walking rescue dogs, and clearing dozens of neighour driveways with my tractor-mounted snowblower after a huge snowstorm (in Ottawa, not Toronto).

With no kids, and being single most of my life, I treat this as an opportunity to give gifts I would have wanted to friend and family who can't afford them or wouldn't buy them for other reasons, delighting in the joy I see, as well as spending quality time with those I care about.

The Christmas times I cherish are sitting listening to my favorite music, late at night, watching the snow drift down and blanket my little world with a clean, beautiful layer of untouched white (I live in the country with huge picture windows), a glass of something special in my hand, totally at peace with the world and myself. It doesn't happen often with a hectic lifestyle, but those are the moments I live for.

And I wish you, and all others here, the same peace and happiness. It's a little early, and the sentiment will be repeated many times in the next ten days, but Merry Christmas (or whatever event you celebrate).
